Swearing an oath is not something we think about much, but it is something the scriptures refer to a lot. They can take many forms in addition to “I swear”, including covenants, promises and vows--to God or invoking God’s name. God gives laws regarding them, sometimes requiring them. God swore oaths, as did the patriarchs and the apostles, including Paul, and even angels. Jesus Himself answered questions under oath. What is our responsibility as Christians regarding oaths?
