Leaven represents sin in general but more specifically it focuses on the sin of pride – being “puffed up” or “lifted up.” Pride was the key to the first recorded sin – Lucifer’s rebellion against God when his heart was “lifted up.” Pride keeps us from realizing and admitting how we need Christ’s sacrifice and how we should continue to struggle to keep sin out of our lives. The “unleavened attitude” or “footwashing attitude” is an attitude of true humility – the opposite of pride. Beginning on the day following the Last Day of Unleavened Bread, physical leaven no longer represents sin and we can bring physical leaven back into our homes. However, we must always remember that we must strive to keep out the spiritual leaven of sin – and especially pride – throughout the year.
