The life of Mary, the mother of Jesus, is a marvelous and inspiring example of humble service to God. The bible doesn’t tell us much about her; in fact, we get only glimpses here and there within the story of the birth, ministry, and sacrifice of the Messiah. But if we look closely at what the Bible does tell us about Mary, and apply what we know about the culture and society in which the story of the Messiah takes place—and what we know about human nature—we can confidently construct a portrait of Mary’s life. And what we find is a life filled with sorrows. If she had become bitter about her life and angry with God, it would certainly be understandable from a human standpoint. Yet Mary was faithful her entire life to the mission God gave her: to be the mother of the Messiah and a founding member of the first congregation of the Church of God.
