Jeroboam started out as a very promising young servant of God. He was so promising that God, through the prophet Ahijah, offered him the kingship over Israel and – if he would then obey God as king – a permanent dynasty like the one given to David. Jeroboam, however, then started on a sequence of bad decisions, each decision leading to a worse one. The resulting policies established “deep grooves” of sin which ultimately led to the destruction of the northern nation of Israel. This sermon examines the progression of Jeroboam’s sins and how we must strive to avoid such tendencies in our own lives.
