Is Speaking in Tongues Proof of God's Spirit?

Speaking in tongues is a phenomenon where people utter words or speech-like sounds, often without any understanding by those who listen and unknown to the speaker. The understanding of speaking in tongues varies among Christian groups. Many view it as an unknown heavenly language, while others believe that God’s one true language is Hebrew. The truth is that the ability to speak in tongues, or languages, is a gift of the Holy Spirit and is used by God’s people to spread the Gospel. The Bible records instances of speaking in tongues, particularly in Acts 2, where the followers of Christ received the Holy Spirit and were understood by the people in their own various native languages clearly and plainly—a miracle. However, the ability to speak in tongues, or languages, is not necessarily proof of one having God’s Spirit. Ultimately, determining whether one has been given the Spirit of God involves self-sacrificing love and a sound mind. It is the power of love that serves as a true sign of God’s Spirit at work.
