There is a spirit in humans that comes from God and makes us different from the animals. That spirit gives us intellect and allows us to reason and build on past experiences. God preserves that spirit upon our death be placed in a new body at the resurrection. The spirit is also unique in that it can connect with God's Holy Spirit.

Walter Tannert is an elder serving in the Tucson and Sierra Vista, Arizona, and El Paso, Texas, congregations. He is retired from the Tucson Police Department after a lengthy career in forensics. He has a B.S. in pharmacy and was also a registered pharmacist in Arizona and California. He and his wife Ann have been in the Church 50 years. They have two sons who are both married. One resides in Tucson and the other in Loveland, Ohio.
