Turn the Other Cheek

In Matthew 5:39, Jesus Christ gave a command to "turn the other cheek" when someone slaps you on one cheek. This so often conflicts with our human nature which wants to seek revenge and retaliation. Christ also said it was once said in former times that one could seek revenge by retaliating and requiring an "eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth". In other words, if someone knocked out one of your teeth, you would be entitled to knock out one of theirs. But clearly in Matthew 5, Christ was initiating a change in what is required of His followers today and those in ancient Israel to whom the words "an eye for an eye" and similar retaliation was allowed. We must understand what He was teaching. This sermon explores that change.

Ken serves as an elder in the United Church of God and currently serves as Associate pastor of the Bismarck, Fargo and Minot, ND and the Watertown and Sioux Falls, SD congregations. He has been married to his wife, Dianne, for 51 years. He is a graduate of Minnesota West Community College and Associated Schools of Miami, Florida. Ken has delivered many sermons and lectures in his service to the Church, and has directed several men's clubs in his local area. In his professional career (now semi-retired), he served as program manager of the SD Local Transportation Assistance Program at SD State University for 28 years and worked in the highway and heavy construction industry for 20 years prior to that.
