What Does it Mean to Open the Door

In Rev. 3:20 - Christ says to those in Laodicea that he stands at the door and knocks.  If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him.  What does it mean open the door and what door should we ourselves knock on so that it may be opened to us?
