What makes Grace so interesting?

Grace is a strange, religious-sounding word that shows up well over 100 times in the Authorized Version. Some have tried to define it as unmerited pardon, or unmerited favor. And some have gone on to describe it as a free gift from God, with no strings attached. Is any of this correct? And what makes grace one of the most exciting concepts in Scripture?
