The title of my sermon today is, What's the Big Deal with David? What's the big deal with David? You've heard of him, you've read his stories many times, and it's interesting that the second most mentioned person in the Bible has his own story to tell, and it's told by more than one or two writers.

Jesus Christ according to one website. His name is mentioned 1248 times. King David mentioned 980 times, second most. Does anybody have any idea who the third most mentioned? Moses, correct, 800 times. Anybody want to try for fourth? Well, I see blank looks on your face. I'm talking this Bible at people. Oh, OK. Thought I might have gone in the wrong church or something. Abraham, you're right. Almost 400 times. I bring this out because I want to make the case today that we do need to not only study those examples, as 2 Timothy 3 16 tells us, for instruction in righteousness, but as examples to us, helps us prepare, helps us to look at ourselves when we look at others. We may read a story in the Bible. God never do that. But they may read your story someday and go, I'd never do that. So it is a time that today that I want to go forth a little interactive towards the end of this. Because I want to tell you what's the big deal with David. It's amazing because verses alone, not just names, but verses alone. David and the Messiah are pretty close. David had, I think, nine hundred and thirty five verses. There it is. And Jesus, 941. That's pretty close. He is Jesus, the Messiah. We need to know how he lived, how he died. What he said, how he lived. It may be almost as important to know something about this man called David. Many of us can relate to him because of his zeal, but also because of his flaws. We realize, got some too. We in many ways are tied to his writings because they do stick with us as we look at the who, what, where and why of David. I found it so interesting though, studying David and I tried to take him apart. Everything about him from his writings to those who write about him. I found it interesting. He had quite a few sons, but none of them were named after him. Does that surprise you? Did me. What also surprised me is you can pick up a concordance. You can look up the name David and he's the only one in there. Of all the people they named someone after in scripture, and you see that many times, David won, just won. Many people are named David today. I think that's where it comes from. I would think, no. But his life was full of highs and lows. And that reminds you of people you know in here, like maybe sitting in your seat. Highs and lows because yes, we have those highs. We see in David's life the major events, even as a young shepherd boy. He had adventure. He learned a great deal of lessons, didn't he? He writes them down. He writes so many things about that time he would have spent those hours and days taking care of sheep. Learning how to shepherd sheep, which would then fill in the story of shepherding people. Pointing also to the great shepherd. Didn't he say the Lord is his what? You have read his writings. You have read his writings. The most famous of that. And even as a, it is believed by theologians and experts that he was actually somewhere between 14 and 15 when he was called about to fight a giant. A nine foot six inch tall giant. A warrior from his youth. Amazing. When you had army of thousands upon thousands standing there. Who decided as they were soldiers. No, not me. I'm not going out. And then they have this little runt. 1415 year old kid walks out. Without a shield. Without any armor. With a slingshot. And takes down the giant in front of all. Of the armies. David had an interesting story. For every high there's a low. He was on the run. He was a fugitive. He was a great warrior. He had to fight to survive. For many years as even the king of the fugitive wanted him dead.

He had a problem with his emotions. Anybody ever experience that. Yeah. He was very emotional person. He could get way up here. Get excited. You could tell him a story. Like Nathan did. And he'd come down with the answer. Kill that man. That man is you David. To which he wrote one of the greatest Psalms ever. And repented. Amazing. Amazing individual. When you study him he wasn't trained to be a king. He wasn't even thought to be the. Even average in his family. By his parents. By his brothers. He was an amazing. King. His amazing ruler.

I want to look at that today. As we go into some scriptures if you will follow me. Be reading from a new King. King James version. If you'll follow me to acts 13. Let's see what Paul has to say about him. Acts 13. Verse 22. As Paul is telling the story. A history. Story of a nation. That God is working with and he gave him a king and the king was named Saul. Saul didn't work out. Said verse 22 and when he had removed him Saul. He raised up for them David as king. To whom also he gave testimony and said I have found David. The son of Jesse. A man after my own. Heart heart heart heart heart. Can't forget that word can we. Because no matter how many times we may look at ourselves. And repent. And we pray that God. Knows we didn't mean it. Or we didn't mean to do it. And hopefully God will look upon our heart. And hopefully he will create in us. A clean heart. That thing that matters to God.

But he said a man after God's own heart. Who will do my will. Second part. Of this call. Imagine. Will do what. All what did I leave out all.

Yes. Could he say that about us. I hope to do God's will. I prayed this morning I would do God's will today. God would like. To see me do all. His will. So can you understand now. Why God called this little boy. This man. Because the heart of God. This man. Because the heart will give all. And. You can fall David and God did. But I guarantee you gave David something to do he would do it with all his heart. When he loved God he did it with what all his heart all his whole all his mind all his being. Man after God's own heart. That is not said about anyone else in the entire Bible. And there are some amazing people in there. Think of Esther. Think of Daniel. Think of Elisha. Think of all these people. But this is one after God's own heart. It's inspiring to me. As I spent the last two weeks in my Bible study reading. Besides the sermon. Preparation that I have to do Bible study preparation I've been. Kind of enthralled with. The study of David reading different translations reading different books. As a matter of fact Mary can you bring me a book that I have. It's in there it's the oldest book. It's falling apart meant to bring it out earlier and got stuck by traffic so we were running behind today. Otherwise I would be thinking about it. And there are many books as I wrote in my Sabbath greeting last night many movies. These three about David. My opinion they all stink. Not terrible. Thank you. This book is falling apart. It's called David the King. I've read a little bit. This is probably the sixth book. I read about David. Jewish writers. This one I found interesting. Because it tells the story of David. And start reading through it and I get to about there. In the book. And I realize that. The writer. Is saying. That David's bisexual. This book was written in 1946.

And that when he said he loved Jonathan it was more than just. And and this was a best seller. Not in the religious realm. But in the worldly realm. Because it took down a hero of the Bible. And brought him down to a base imagine in 1946 picking this up and beating it.

Page one fifty nine. Six hundred pages. I couldn't go any further. But it's out there. And I expect this book. To be made into a movie sometime down the road. It fits the world's view of David. Man of all seasons. A renaissance man. No the Bible tells us he was a man after God's own heart. Matter of fact let's go over to the book. Matter of fact let's go over to. First Samuel. Go to first Samuel. Chapter sixteen. We know the story of. Of Samuel having to go. Annoying a king. Because God told him to told him where to go. Told him the family. But didn't tell him the boy's name. And so he went to this huge family. Farmers. And the first son. Jesse brought out. This is man. Man he's a good looking guy. The extra thing guy is this is him. Nope. Not on and went down but then we go to verse seven. First Samuel sixteen reading from the new King James version. But the Lord said to Samuel do not look at his appearance. Or at the height of his stature because I have refused him. He had feel good about that probably. For the Lord does not see as man sees for man looks at the outward appearance but the Lord looks at the. All right. Is there a pattern here. I kind of think so. This word keeps popping up. Heart. The heart. We read down in verse twelve. Because he went through the other ones he said don't you have anybody else. It was yeah I've got the youngest son but he's out tending cheap. He's a runt. He just kid. Bring him. Verse twelve so he sent and brought him. Now he was ready. With bright eyes. Good looking kid. And the Lord. Said arise. I know him. I mean imagine that. You're David you're this kid. All your brothers. And. You understand you really understand what's going on. But here the. Prophet priest. That he is. The highest religious man anywhere around. He says anoint him. And he takes out this oil and he pours it over this young kid's head in front of his parents. He said annoying him. All the people on the earth he could have chose. From all the tribes he could have chosen. And he chooses a kid.

Then Samuel took the horn of oil anointed him in the midst of his brothers. You know they had to be going. What. What you can tell that later. When he goes to deliver food to them and they're in the army. Right. Remember that one. His brothers. What about those few sheep. Way. Way coming up here for years coming to watch.

Who got to watch. Within the hour. They got to watch their younger brother. They got to watch the runt. Take down the giant. Because they were too scared to walk out. And face the giant.

And then we read finishing verse and the spirit of the Lord came upon David from that. Day. Forward. So Samuel. A rose and went to Rama. Impressive. Beginning. Humble background. Going out taking care of sheep. Why is this so important. It's because not only the story of. What David was what he became. But what he's going to be. So important. In the kingdom of God it's pointed out there are many many scriptures. King David's up here. In the resurrection he's up here. Right next to Christ. He's going to be king over the holy city. Yes Christ is over the entire world. He is there. Over Jerusalem. Even with. All his warts. All his problems all his issues. All his weaknesses. He's still going to be king. And why. Goes back to that. Goes back to the heart. He had one it was a big one. And you how to use it. And God knew how to use it too. So let's look. At Ezekiel thirty seven. You will join me. Ezekiel thirty seven. Most of us know Ezekiel thirty seven because it's read on the. Eighth day of the feast. This is dry bones chapter. And by remembers the dry bones. What bones are connected to the that bone and that bone is connected to that bone and. Okay so we understand about the resurrection. Well here what follows that. This is a beautiful bar because we know this is going to happen. We know it's in the kingdom. But then we read. Is equal thirty seven verse twenty one. Says equal then say to them that says the Lord God. Surely I will take the children of Israel from among the nations. Wherever they have gone. And will gather them from every side and bring them into their own land. And I will make them one nation in that land. Has that been done. No. So what is this. This is future. He was telling them this is going to happen eventually. But it hasn't happened yet. In the land on the mountain of Israel and one king shall be king over them all. They shall no longer be two nations. There's not Israel and Judah. They're coming back together. And they shall ever they shall nor shall they ever be divided into two kingdoms again. It's never going to happen. And they shall not defile themselves anymore with their idols nor their detestable things. The reason they went into captivity and were shipped out to other lands. Nor with any of their transgressions but I will deliver them from all their dwelling places. In which they have sinned and will cleanse them. Then they shall be my people and I will be their God. Hasn't happened yet. But what happens when it does read verse 24 David. My servant shall be king over them. Think about it. He's having to tell this. And it's 400 years. David's been in the grave. David's been dead for 400 years. But he's telling this is going to happen. And they shall have one shepherd. And they shall also walk in my judgments. And observe my statutes. And do them. Not been done yet. Then they shall dwell in the land which I have given to Jacob my servant. Where your father's dwelt and they shall dwell there. They their children and their children's children forever. And my servant. David shall be their prince for ever. Wow. What a time that is ahead. These nations that are going to come back to their original lands because he promised him. He said it's your land. He said Abraham. Jacob this is yours. He's bringing them back. They know of David all through the years. All through the centuries. They are going to have him as their king. They're going to know who he is.

Three dawn down finishing this chapter here. Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them. And it shall be an everlasting covenant with them. I will establish and multiply them. I will set my sanctuary in their midst forever. It's all future. None of this has happened. But it will. My tabernacle also shall be with them. Indeed I will be their God and they shall be my people. The nation also will know that I the Lord sanctify Israel when my sanctuary is in their midst for ever. An everlasting covenant. An everlasting covenant. Such a powerful thing. But I have to go one more time. I have to go over to Jeremiah.

Jeremiah 30. This is Jeremiah is talking as they're about to be taken into captivity in Babylon. But Jeremiah saying as God speaks to him and said write it in a book so we would have it. And Jeremiah 30 verse 3 said Behold the days are coming says the Lord that I will bring back from captivity my people Israel and Judah says the Lord.

This is in the five eighties. Because they went in captivity five eighty six five eighty seven. Took over a year to get them all in there. A hundred and thirty something years hundred forty years before that. Israel had gone into captivity. Taken there. To a different land but he said I'm going to bring them back and I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers and.

They shall possess it. Verse nine. But they shall serve the Lord their God and David their King. Whom I will raise up for them. He's in his grave and he's going to be raised up. It's powerful statement and why is he raising him up because of the throne. He's going to sit on a throne. And God's going to give him that throne. An amazing throne. And he will rule. Just like Christ. Why. Let's go back to that H word. It's pretty big. It's pretty big. There are multiple places I could go to but I won't. Because I want to talk about. David and I want you involved I look at my.

Clock here. I think I have enough time. We want to talk about that throne because David. Was not from royalty. But he became royalty. Just like everyone I see out here today your destiny is royal priesthood a chosen generation. And it's not because you're born from David. It'll be because of one thing. That heart. That's it. That's what got David this throne. Over every other man. That is what will get us.

That throne. The royalty. My God has destined. For his called out ones. Let's look at David's family. Jesse. Was his father. Do you know his mother. No there's no other name. Nits of it. You ever heard of Nits of it. You never read about his mother. He had a mother. We all have mothers right. Did you know David had one.

Did you know her name. Did anybody know her name. You know why it's not in the Bible. So I appreciate that. I had to go to other resources to get it. And Jewish history says that's was his mother's name. It's a vet. You know what's interesting about it. Read if you have the time. Well you can actually there's actually a book. There's a couple of books. I know Sharon's probably read one. About all the kings. And what the Bible says about the kings. You know every king. Except this one. Every king in this book. In. Judah for sure.

I don't remember I don't think it's in all of Israel. But all of. Judas King. The mother was listed. The mother was listed. Except for this one. Interesting isn't it. Is something different. Now is it a matter of salvation. Hope not. Because I would have lost out on this one. But I want to talk about that. How many brothers did Jesus have. Seven very good. How many sisters did he have. He said three. I got three. Do I have four. Do I have five.

We only know of two. He could have had more. But it does not say. One was named Abigail. That one named. And the other one. Zuryaiah. She was the mother of Joam.

So he came from a good pretty good size family.

I have one brother and two sisters. And I thought we were big enough. Imagine growing up in that family. What else does it say. You've done pretty good job here. Knowing something about David. I think it's important. How many wives did he have. Anybody have a number. He says eight. Would that be right. Eight. Eight wives. I've got one and it's enough for me. Right. He is correct. Eight wives. But then he has some concubines. Which are considered second class wives. How many concubines did he have. Does the scripture tell us. Yes it does. Second Samuel 15 second Samuel 16 second Samuel 20. It tells us how many had.

10. I don't I wonder if he had a smile on his face. With that many wives that many. And look at him just smiling. I guess he is. Yes. Well we all smile on a selfie. Think about that. What's wrong with that picture. Not that picture. What's wrong with. 18 wives. What did God tell Saul to not to do when he became king. Don't multiply your wives. Don't buy horses from. Egypt don't do all these he said don't do it. What did he do. He did it. But wait a minute. He said man after God's own. Heart wasn't he. So is it possible for you to be a person after God's own heart and you still do what God tells you not to do.

Remind you of Paul saying that that I know that I shouldn't do that I do and that I know I should do that I don't do. He knows we're human. But you know you know what this does for me. It doesn't take David down in my view. What it does. It elevates Christ. Walking as a human. On this earth. Knowing God's will. And he did it all. Not one sin. Pretty important. So how about these wives you remember any of their names. No. Who were who. Abigail. What you remember. What was it. Oh you remember that one. Like me. Yes.

No. No. Michael.

Ahinoam. Abigail. Maaka. Hagith. Avatar. Agla. That's.

His name's not really familiar to us is it. But you'd know him by their children. Right. When you have that many wives. And that many children. Do you think there's going to be jealousy. Is that maybe a reason God said don't don't do it. Who's first. Who was the first born. Of the. David's children anybody. Amnon. Amnon. Oh yeah you remember Amnon. Oh yes. Amnon. He fell in love with his half sister. Had to have her. And he raped her didn't he.

Who was his half sister. Tamar. Tamar. Right. And Tamar mother. Was my car. They would say maka. You know who. My car gave birth to. Absalom. Very good. Who killed Amnon. Absalom. Brother sister half brother. You're talking about a mess here. You're talking about Adonijah. Another son born by one of the other wives. Who tried to usurp Solomon didn't he. In fact he claimed I am King.

Big mistake. Big mistake. Big mistake. But all of us remember. Batcha boy don't we. Not she but. How many children she have. One. Two. I got one I got two I got four I got five can I get six can I get seven. No. Five. One dead. One named Solomon and three after Solomon. Don't ever hear about them though do you. You don't hear about.

Yet they were sons. Sons of the king. Son of the royal family.

And yet. With all these sons how many how many sons do we. Think David had.

He said seventy sons it's a lot.

Between eighteen and nineteen. We don't know because some of the names have been changed. Others believe it's twenty with the dead. Son. Okay so you've got all these. Eight wives. He doesn't say he had any children by the concubines. But he had them by these eight wives. And so. What. Eighteen nineteen or twenty let's just go with eighteen. By eight wives. Seven because my kid Michael never had any and she wasn't about to have any. So let's go with seven. How many daughters. Did David have.

That's it we know tomorrow. They want we only know of one. And I mean it lets you up. It only lists her. Well how is it possible that you go eighteen and one. Nineteen and one. Strange isn't it. Just look at the genetics. Odds are. Think my brother had three boys and then decided he needed one more time and he said if he didn't. Well then he got a girl. Okay. But what was so important to kings at the time. Ah the air is a sun. Very important.

I find it interesting. A man after God's own heart. Where do we see that more than anything else. Anybody. In his character yes do we see it anywhere in scripture. Beside Samuel. Ah and the Psalms. Ah how many Psalms are there. In that book. Hundred and fifty. Last one's a hundred and fifty that we know of Solomon wrote three thousand so I don't know. Hundred and fifty how many did David right. Seventy three very good. Yes seventy three that we know there's some we don't know. That might have done it they say some some argue seventy five to seventy eight but we know seventy three put his name down. Are they everlasting words. I think so. What's your favorite song. Anybody. Twenty three the Lord is my. I shall not. Yes. Most funerals. I give it usually at the graveside when I do a funeral. Because it's so vivid it's a picture when you lay somebody in the ground. The green pastures. Yes it motivates us. To read up a lot of us know it matter of fact I know it but I don't know it for my new King James I know it from the old King James because I heard it when I was a kid. And we only had the old King James because I'm old. Okay that's all we had back then. But then. But then. The experts say there are three. Of the most popular songs written by David. The top three you just named number one can you name number two. What. Fifty one you are right Jonathan. Fifty one. Create in me a. Boy how many times you said that. I have I wanted out had to. Because I'm going how in the world did I ever do that why did I say that why did I do that why did I think that. God you need to clean up. This mess you've called. And start with the heart. It's a beautiful song it's something that does all of us and and and it's. He wrote it at a time where he was very down. He was desperate read it from that context and you realize he wrote that. Because he had nowhere else to go. And last God created him a clean heart he was lost. What an inspiration to each of us when we kind of get down sometimes. Maybe we haven't done anything wrong but. It's just. Life. Life. Just takes its. Pleasure in beating us over the head. Too many times.

Sometimes we need to pray God. Create in me a new heart. Create in me a David Hart. That that will do your will. All your will. How powerful. What an inspiration. You think David couldn't been in. A. Inspirational speaker could made money on the circuit preaching telling people about the heart. Of course he could just read his songs it's hard for him to leave heart out. Everything about it. Okay you got one you got two. Can you give me the third. All right. You have read your Bible. I really thought that would go around the room a little bit. You kill my time now you just right now I have more time. Yes. 22 suffering servant. He. It's a prophecy. It's a prophecy of the Messiah. So crystal clear. It even goes that that. Christ. In so many ways. He was repeating it on the. On the hanging on that piece of wood or parts of it. The strong bulls of the Shan. I mean it's like wow. How did David do that. How did he write that unless God put that in him. The same. God who is going to suffer. Just like that.

So very powerful. The greatest songs. So you got his you got his three greatest songs according to. Religious people. How about his three. Greatest scenes. Is that as easy. What's the number one. How about the two can be combined. Right. You're right and bash.

He committed adultery. Because he had. Seven other wives. And he took this man's wife. And then he said I got to cover up my tracks. How far must he have been. From God. To have to bring him in you know the story. Has to bring him in tries to get him drunk. And he probably did get him drunk but the guy still wouldn't. Go to his wife. How devious was David. And then he has him killed. Might even say assassinated.

And then and then what happened then. Nine months. Didn't. Nine months. And then the child died. And then what happened. Nathan. How long had he been detached from God. Think about it long enough for him to do all this plan all this stuff and still nine months.

Makes us think doesn't it. A man after God's own heart can get that far out. So can we. So can we. You got that one right about number two. Oh the counting of Israel. Yes he can why do you count Israel. What it was that set you saying. One see how big his army was correct. Well what's wrong with that. God told him not to. God told him not to. That I'm the power. Not the army. Who also told him not to. Joe out his nephew. His own nephew who was a mass murderer. He loved to kill. He delighted in it. Even he told him. You don't need to do this. Amazing. Amazing story. How about the last one. According to religious experts. Have a third. Oh wait a minute. I may have this. Church finally. I've got I've got the church on the hill on their heels. Hey don't know. So David only had two sins.

The Ark of the Covenant. Where. Guy put it on a cart instead of carrying it. And he got upset. Because the guy reached out. What was that guy's name. Aza. You. You amazing you've all been engineering may call us of the day. And he died and David was upset wasn't. But that wasn't it. According to them. According to the religious experts. His third biggest mistake. Was taking as his top counselor. A hippo fell. A hippo fell. Who turned against him with Absalom. And told him everything to do. And if the fail happened to be according to. You can check all the sources right Sharon. Either his grand either. Basheba's grandfather or. Her uncle. Did he finally decide to take. Take it out on day. You didn't forget what he did. To your offspring. To your relative.

Finally. Will leave that because those are the top three. But. Before I begin to wrap this up. I have to have mine. Okay. I gotta have mine. It's the biggest question. I have. And I would love to ask God. Because I don't see it. And maybe last night how cold was it up here. Well we were fifty two weren't we Mary. We were fifty two down in Deerfield Beach. Can't. Kind of cold. Yeah do you guys get cold last night. Yes. Yes. Well no matter how cold I get. And how old I get I can't see Mary. Going okay let's bring in a twenty year old girl to keep you warm at night. Right. And she's going to be beautiful. And everything about. It's okay. That one. I gotta find out someday. That's my biggest. You've got the answer. Okay. Tell us there Mr. Doctor's order. I don't think a doctor's going to write me that excuse. I don't think Mary would accept it. And I don't think the home office would buy it either.

Sharon wouldn't accept that would you. She said no an arm. Okay. No matter how cold you get.

Yes. Well no we can't call us in and he said and they were specific that he didn't do it. But how do you rationalize that. I've got eighteen. I got eighteen women. And one of those eighteen can't keep me warm at night. I got to go get me a twenty year. That's something we can discuss later because I have my theories but you're not here for my theories. So we're talking about a man after God's own heart. Who will do his will.

Think about it. It should bring that question. Should answer the question in your mind. Why are you. Here. Why are you here. Why did God call you out of eight billion people. Why with your. What's bumps issues and problems call you. To be. Of the royal priesthood. To be sitting on a throne. To be ruling with him forever. Why.

Let's go to second Chronicles 16 and verse nine. Love this verse especially from New King James version. For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth. To show himself strong on behalf of those whose. Hearts are loyal to him. Brother. That's why he'll have your back. That's why I had David's back because his heart was loyal. Perfect. No. Loyal. Yes. He was. He was. It's such a beautiful. Beautiful story of David. David had. Four things I will leave you with. I call it HRDR. David doesn't have that. Human race doctor if you call it for acronym HRDR. So what he had. He was humble. Yet he was confident in the Lord. He was Reverend. He elevated God in his heart and in his mind. D. He was devoted most of his life. And the biggest was the R. He was repentant. He was a bigger repenter than he was sinner. And if we can all achieve that in our lifetime. If we can all just have part of that. Well how does God know. Because he knows your heart. Is like David's.

This king this poet. This warrior. This musician. The shepherd. He is an incredible example. To each and every one of us. He was a flawed man. But he was a forgiven man. And God has plans for him. Just like he has plans for us. Never forget. It's about this.
