The people of Johnstown once prepared for disaster, but as time passed and nothing happened, preparation gave way to neglect and eventually apathy. When the dam finally broke, many were caught completely unaware. The same danger exists spiritually today. God has warned us about the end of this present age, the Day of the Lord, and the return of Jesus Christ to establish His Kingdom. If we grow apathetic, we risk being unprepared when sudden destruction comes.
Christ and the apostles repeatedly urge us to “watch and be sober.” The lesson is clear: do not be lulled into apathy by the passing of time. Stay awake, heed the warnings, and prepare diligently now so we can be ready to serve in the Kingdom of God when the dam breaks.
