Sooner or later, we all face the question: Why was I born? The Bible reveals that you were created in God’s image with a purpose far greater than survival—are you ready to discover what that is?
[Steve Myers] She sat alone in the hospital parking lot, the engine off, the world quiet, except for the storm inside her. Her father was gone. A quiet man, hardworking, never asked for much, and now, just like that, his life was over. No great legacy, no last words, just silence. She gripped the steering wheel. What does it all mean, she thought? Is that all there is? Work? Stress? A few good memories and then it's over?
Then the deeper question came, not just about him, but about herself. Why was I born?
Sooner or later, we all face that question, whether in grief, silence, or life's chaos. That quiet ache. You felt it. What's the point of all this?
You may chase success, money, relationships, but the question lingers. Why am I here?
Here's the truth. When you fail to understand that you were created in the image of God, that deep sense of purpose remains out of reach. What if you were made for more, something eternal, beyond just surviving? What if the answer is already written into the fabric of who you are?
Well, you were made for a purpose beyond anything this world can offer. You were made for something eternal, to become a spirit-born child in God's divine family. And discovering that changes everything.
So let's step into the reason you were born. Now that means going back, not just to your past, but to the beginning of humanity.
Genesis 1:27 says, so God created man in His own image. Now this isn't poetry. It's a foundational truth. You were made in God's image. Not like animals. Not even like angels. Only humanity bears His imprint. To be made in God's image means to reflect His nature. And like God, you've been given free will so you can choose. You have intellect to think and create and dream, emotions to love and to worship. And of course, relationships to connect with others and, most importantly, with God. These define what it means to be made in God's image.
As it says in Psalm 8, verse 4, "What is man that You are mindful of him? You have crowned him with glory and honor." So even in your flaws, you matter, not because of what you've done, but because of who made you.
Think of it like a master artist. Every brushstroke, every color choice, every detail is crafted with painstaking care and precision. The artist pours his heart and skill into his work, knowing it will be a reflection of his unique vision. And when the painting is finally complete, what does he do? He steps back and he signs it, marking it uniquely his. Now that isn't just an afterthought. It's a declaration. This has been intentionally crafted. It's valuable. It has a purpose.
Now in the same way, you are God's masterpiece. His image is the signature on your life. You're not random. You bear his imprint and that makes you extraordinary.
Now that's just the beginning. Your life is meant to be a journey, a journey of spiritual growth from human weakness into divine character.
1 John 3:1, reminds us. It says, Behold, what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us that we should be called children of God. That behold word, that gives a sense of marveling. So imagine it. The God who made the galaxies wants you to be his divine child. John also wrote, But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in his name. You weren't born just to be a biological being. Your purpose is to be a spirit-born child in God's divine family.
You know those tough times? I've been there too, when life felt like it was unraveling. I remember one night saying, God, I've done everything I know how to do and nothing's working. What's the point? Now there was no thunder, just stillness. And then God's word came to my mind. Call to me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things which you do not know.
Now maybe you've been there too, done everything you know how to do, and you're still left asking, God, why am I even here?
Well, I've been there and I want to personally offer you something to help you find real answers. It's our free study aid called, Why Were You Born? Now you can find it at ucg.org/bt494. Now it's not just a nice read, it's an eye-opening look into your God-given identity. It explores what it really means to be made in God's image and how your life fits into His eternal plan. If you've ever felt like something's missing, this could be your turning point. It can help bring biblical insight into the incredible purpose of your life. So if something in you longs for more, this could be a game changer.
Now here are three steps to help discover your purpose.
First, ask God to reveal His purpose to you. Start by going to the one who made you. Now don't worry about saying the perfect words. Just pray, Father, You created me. Please show me why.
James 1:5 gives us a promise. It says, If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. So you see, God's not hiding. He's waiting. And He promises to answer.
Now I'm reminded of the story of a boy who lost his father's watch in the barn. He searched frantically, tearing through the hay, checking every corner, growing more and more desperate. Finally, his grandfather said, stop. Sit quietly and just listen. The boy sat, took a breath, and in the silence he heard it. Tick, tick, tick. He followed the sound and found what he'd been looking for all along.
Now sometimes it's the same with us. Your purpose isn't automatically uncovered by doing more. It's found in the quiet, in the listening. So stop. Ask God to show you and listen, because He's already reaching out, waiting to lead you into the life you were born for.
Now step two to discover your purpose is open your Bible with expectation. You know, this book isn't a dusty old thing of ancient words. It's the voice of your Creator. Psalm 119:105 reminds us, Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. So when you open the Bible, you're not just reading old pages. You're stepping into a conversation with the God who made you.
It's like being lost in a city when you don't have God in your life, a city that you don't even know and it's nighttime and your phone's dead and there's no GPS and every single turn seems to lead deeper into confusion. And that panic begins to set in. But then a forgotten paper map in the glove box. Not flashy, but now you've got direction. You know, that's what God's Word does. Now it won't fix everything instantly, but it will give you something priceless. Light for the next step. So open it. Not out of guilt or out of pressure, but open it with expectation. Expect to hear God's voice. Expect clarity. Expect comfort. Expect purpose.
Now step three to discover your purpose is live to obey. You are made to reflect God through obedience in your everyday choices.
1 Peter 1:14 says, As obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts as in your ignorance, but as He who has called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct. Now this isn't about perfection. It's about direction. Step by step, you become who God created you to be. You're on a spiritual journey, so walk it with intention. Let your life speak, not just about your beliefs, but who you belong to. Born in God's image, transformed by His Spirit, ultimately to be a Spirit-born child in God's eternal family. That's your purpose. Born with a divine imprint, not just to live, not just to succeed, or not just to be good, but to be loved, to be called, and to be changed.
Philippians 1:6, reminds us, "...being confident of this very thing, that he who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ." You're not a mistake. You're not here by accident. You're called for something eternal, and your life has meaning beyond today. You're here on purpose, with purpose, for a purpose. You don't need all the answers right now. Just take the next step with the God who does.
So today, start walking in the purpose you were born for.
