Age of Disbelief

[Darris McNeely] This headline says that the new chaplain of Harvard is an atheist, and he's good without God. Harvard University has elected, from among all the different chaplains, for all the different faiths represented at Harvard, they've elected an atheist to be the head chaplain for all of the students and residents at Harvard University, and he's an atheist.

"Despite," the article says, "his disbelief in any higher power, Harvard chaplain...the chaplains felt that this Greg Epstein, author of a book "Good Without God: What a Billion Nonreligious People Do Believe," that he was a good choice for the position due to young people's increasing lack of religiosity." Sign of the times. It goes on to say there's a rising group of people who no longer identify with any religious tradition, but still experience a need for conversation and support around what it means to be a good human and live an ethical life. And then this quote kinda ends it all. "We don't look to a god for answers," he said, "We are each other's answers."

And so, an atheist heading up the list of chaplains at a major university in the United States. A sign of the times, a sign of the culture, and where we are, unfortunately. Those that work around young people in any university setting, and in family settings understand that the poles, the trends that are shaping the minds of young people today, and not just young people, but all generations.

In an age of disbelief, and a time and a period when, as some say, and it's true, God has been dethroned, but it's an interesting milestone. To at least note of an atheist that's leading all the other chaplains of faith at a major American college and university like this. Again, I'm reminded of the scripture in Romans 1, where Paul says that they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, and gave them over to a different mind, to a reprobate mind.
