Closer!

[Steve Myers] How often do you take things for granted? I think we all do at times, but I was taking something for granted while I was driving my car, and I happened to notice it again the other day. Do you remember what your passenger side mirror says on it? There are some words that are written probably at the bottom of that mirror. I wrote part of it up here today. Objects in mirror are closer than they appear. It's because that's a convex mirror so I guess that makes things appear quite different than they are in reality.

Now as I got to thinking about that, what is it in your mirror that's closer than you might think? I think oftentimes life is like that. Life is like that truism that's on the road as well, that things come faster than you might think at times, that certainly life is briefer than we expect. It's shorter than we expect. Time flies by so fast that we don't really do the things that we should be doing. We take things for granted. Do we really take the time that we should maybe to spend with our kids? We know that we should, and yet, boy, time goes right by so quickly. It's over before we know it.

Do we really take time to encourage someone when we really should? Do we take that extra moment or two because life is brief? Do we take that time to do the things that we should?

You see, that mirror is probably one of those reminders that, just like it says there, our window of opportunity to accomplish whether it's love or encouragement or just spending time together doing fun things. It's just shorter than you might think.

So next time you're driving, look in that mirror. Notice those words. They're very similar to the words that we find over in the book of Romans. And in Romans it says this, "Understand the present time. The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber because salvation is nearer now than when we first believed" (Romans 13:11).

You know, whether we're talking about our spiritual life, whether we're talking about our marriage relationships, whether we're talking about raising our children, whether we're talking about having a positive attitude, now's the time to do it. Don't wait. Things are closer than they appear: your salvation, as well as the rest of your life. So take advantage of the time that God's given you.
