[Steve Myers] Have you ever tried to change something in your life? I mean, really tried, but somehow ended up right back where you started? Maybe you even told yourself, this time I'm going to be more patient, more disciplined, more consistent. And for a while, it seemed like you were making progress.
But then the pressure hit. Life got busy. That guy cut you off in traffic. And before you know it, those old reactions came right back. We've all been there, because deep, lasting change is hard. The truth is, real change, spiritual change, takes more than determination. It takes more than good intention. It takes the help of God. Real change takes God's power. Now, that's why the Feast of Pentecost is so important. Pentecost reveals the next vital step in God's plan for humanity. It shows us how true transformation actually happens. Certainly not by human effort alone, but by the gift of God's Holy Spirit. God doesn't just call us to change. He gives us the power to change.
Now, as we've seen, God has a plan for all mankind that begins with Passover, where we remember the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of our sins.
Then the Feast of Unleavened Bread reminds us that we must put sin out of our lives and begin walking in a new way. But that raises an important question. How do I really do that? How do I actually become different?
Pentecost gives the answer. This festival is also called the Feast of Firstfruits. In the harvest, the firstfruits were the first portion of the crop to ripen—not the whole harvest, but the beginning of it. Now that points to the plan of God. God ultimately desires all people to come to know Him and become part of His Spirit-born family. But right now, He's calling a firstfruits of people—an initial group of people He's working with now, preparing for His purpose.
Pentecost? Well, it pictures that calling in a very powerful way.
In Acts 2, believers were gathered together on the Feast of Pentecost. Then suddenly there came a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and what looked like flames of fire rested on them, and God poured out His Holy Spirit. You know, that moment changed everything. It marked the beginning of a new phase in God's plan when His Spirit would be given to those He calls, who repent and are baptized. And that's the key to real change. Real change takes God's power.
Now, because God's Spirit gives us the strength to think differently, to respond differently, to live differently, it actually helps us to resist sin. It helps us to grow spiritually. It helps us to develop the mind and the character of Jesus Christ. You know, that kind of change doesn't come from human strength alone. It comes from God.
So ask yourself, have I been trying to change on my own? Have I been relying only on willpower, when what I really need is God at work in my life?
Pentecost is a powerful reminder that God never asks us to change without giving us the help that we need. It's amazing. He gives us His Spirit so we can truly overcome, so we can grow, so we can become new. And you know, He doesn't just forgive us, He empowers us.
I hope you'll take the time to read Acts 2. Think about what God did on that day as the New Testament church began. And consider what He might be doing in your life right now.
Because Pentecost isn't just about some event in the past. It's about the power of God that He offers us today.
