Can Sunday be a Sabbath, a day of worship?
[Steve Myers] Knowing that we teach the Saturday Sabbath – from Friday sunset to Saturday Sabbath – a viewer wrote in with a question. She said, “I believe Scripture does present Sunday, the first day of the week, as a day of worship.”
So, when you consider that, can Sunday be a Sabbath? Does that count? Does that fulfill what Scripture really says? Well, one of the passages that she referred to is found in 1 Corinthians chapter 16 and verses 1 and 2, right at the very beginning of chapter 16. And there’s a couple of things in this passage that may, on an initial reading, seem to point to that very fact. But let’s check it out and see what it actually says. 1 Corinthians 16:1, it says this: “Now, concerning the collection for the saints, as I’ve given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also. On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there may be no collections when I come” (1 Corinthians 16:1-2). And then Paul goes on with other things following that.
So the question is, was there a worship service going on on the first day of the week, and were they taking up collection? Were they passing the offering basket on the first day of the week, on Sunday? Does this validate Sunday worship – and in fact, for that matter – does it validate taking up a collection? Well, in fact, it’s not talking about either one of those things.
Now, it’s going to take a moment to go through this, so I hope you’ll come right back, watch the next episode of BT Daily, and first we’ll talk about that collection. Then we’ll talk about Sunday worship. Stay with us then for the next one.
So we’ll see you next time on BT Daily.
Too many of us live at a frantic pace, trying desperately to stay on top of everything we need to get done. It's no wonder we feel out of touch with our spouses, our families and even our Creator. But did you know that God offers a little-understood remedy for our hurried and harried lives?
