What would you have to do to be elected? You're probably not running for office but you might be surprised to find you are in an "election".
[Steve Myers] Turn on the news in America today and you can't help but hear about the upcoming election. It is everywhere in the news. And it got me to thinking a little bit about what the Bible has to say about election. And a particular passage came to mind as I was reading through 2 Peter. And in that passage it says, "Be even more diligent to make your call and election sure" (2 Peter 1:10-11). And as I thought about that, that obviously isn't talking about a presidential election, or a senatorial election, or any kind of voting that's going on. It's a whole different subject all together.
[Darris McNeely] No, it's actually talking about God electing us, God choosing to call us and to show us His way of life and to offer us the opportunity for salvation. And He's admonishing through Peter in that verse there that we make that election sure. And that's the most important election that we really need to focus on because it has eternal consequences, the calling that God gives to each of us.
[Steve Myers] Yeah, and that's an amazing thing we know that God's got to do the choosing. So, He's called us and that's His job. But there in 2 Peter is a reminder that once we've received that call, we better be diligent to make sure the election takes place, to make sure that we're there and we're a part of God's way, and we're choosing to live His way. It's not something that we can just believe, but there's this diligence that's involved in doing God's way so that that election is sure.
[Darris McNeely] And any election or calling from God always includes choice. We make the choice to accept that calling. We make the choice to stay in that calling, to stay faithful to God, and stay true to the calling. God always allows human beings the freedom of choice. And that's a beautiful thing.
[Steve Myers] That is an amazing thing and that's one of the most important responsibilities that we have and in 2 Timothy 2:19, here's what it says there, it says, "Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity." So what should our choice be when it comes to our election? Well, it better be choosing to depart from sin. Get out of lawlessness. Follow God's way and put it to practice in your life. And that's the way to make your election sure.
[Darris McNeely] And that's the most important choice we have.
