[Gary Petty] Have you ever heard someone say that the Jews, by act of birth, are guilty as the murderers of Jesus? Who really was responsible for the death of Jesus Christ? I mean, obviously it’s the Roman soldiers who actually killed Him. And then there was Pontius Pilate, the governor, who condemned Him even though he knew He was an innocent Man.

When you really understand Christ’s mission, why He came – the Son of God came to earth to die for all humanity. He actually said He laid down His life that no man could take it. He laid it down voluntarily for us. When we begin to understand His mission, why He came and why you and I, because of the corrupt human nature we have – we deserve before the law of God death. When we come to grips with that, we begin to understand why Jesus had to come as our substitute, to die for us, to be resurrected, to return back to the Father and perform this work of salvation.

Gary Petty is a 1978 graduate of Ambassador College with a BS in mass communications. He worked for six years in radio in Pennsylvania and Texas. He was ordained a minister in 1984 and has served congregations in Longview and Houston Texas; Rockford, Illinois; Janesville and Beloit, Wisconsin; and San Antonio, Austin and Waco, Texas. He presently pastors United Church of God congregations in Nashville, Murfreesboro and Jackson, Tennessee.
