So much accomplished, so little to report. So went Sunday’s work of the Council of Elders as it took on two topics—job descriptions and the Rules of Association—that are critically important to the long-term organization of the Church, yet can be crafted only after hours of laborious reviewing and composing precise phrasing. The day’s work was therefore productive, but the editing processes are not especially newsworthy.

The Council is taking sufficient time to carefully craft these types of documents, hoping to create a finished product that does not need to be revised in the future. Soliciting input from the ministry and membership for the Rules of Association in particular has somewhat slowed its development.

Dennis Luker, as chairman of the Roles and Responsibilities Committee, led the discussions on job descriptions for the Council as a body, individual Council members, and the Council Chairman. The Church’s Constitution and Bylaws mandate numerous general duties of the various branches of the administration, but specific tasks need further definition. With the suggested corrections from this session in hand, the committee returns to work on the next revision.

The Rules of Association document is nearing completion after several drafts and reviews by both the Council and General Conference of Elders. The Council today considered the ideas and ramifications of the latest input from the GCE, made its revisions, and now plans to resubmit it to the GCE by December 1 for one more evaluation. It aims to complete the paper at the January Council meeting, and to have it on the docket for final ratification at the March GCE meeting.
