The 2024 Election
By now we have been exposed to a variety of opinions regarding the outcome of the 2024 Presidential Election. The reactions range from absolute elation to deep despair and everything in between. I was born in 1963, just one month after the assassination of John F Kennedy. Lyndon B Johnson had taken over as president. From that point to the present, I have calculated that the switch between Democrat and Republican administrations is nearly 50%. It is safe to say we have all seen ups and downs in our lifetimes as to who our preferred leaders would be. None of us get what we want all the time.
But now imagine being a citizen of the Roman Empire during that first century AD when the Christian Church was new. From the Church’s formation on Pentecost 31 AD and through that first century, the Christians had seen several emperors come and go. The changes in administration often came about by hostile takeover with the previous emperor being assassinated.
By the time the Apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Romans, it was Emperor Nero who was in power, perhaps the most infamous emperor in Church of God history. If ever there was a time for Christians to be in deep despair, it was during the reign of Nero. And yet the Apostle Paul has some remarkable advice for Christian citizens of the Roman Empire. Space does not allow me to quote all of Romans chapters 12 and 13. It is worth your time to read those chapters in full. Let’s see some highlights:
Romans 12
Vs.2 do not conform to this world. Vs.3, 16 be humble. Vs.18 strive to live in peace with everyone.
Romans 13
Vs.1 Submit to governing authorities. Vs.3 Do what is good. Vs.4 Be afraid of breaking the law. Vs.5 Nurture a good conscience. Vs.6 Pay your taxes. Vs.7 Give honor to governing authority
The Roman Christians were living in a corrupt society while anticipating the end of the age and the return of Jesus Christ to rule the earth. The letter to the Romans is a powerful message to guide Christians through troubled times in any age.
Regarding the 2024 Election: Are you happy with the outcome? Do not be overly optimistic. This world still needs God’s Kingdom. Are you unhappy with the outcome? Do not be in deep despair. This world will receive God’s Kingdom. The United Church of God is dedicated to help guide you through this troubled world.
