Revelation Part 54

Revelation 12:6-7
5 minutes read time

Revelation 12:7 declares, "And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought." This passage reveals that the conflict described in Revelation is not merely political or military. There is a spiritual battle behind the visible events taking place on earth.

In Revelation 12:6 the focus is on the woman. She flees into the wilderness, where she is nourished for 1,260 days. This period corresponds to three and a half years, a significant prophetic period that appears repeatedly throughout Revelation. The woman represents God's people during a time of persecution, but the fact that she is nourished in the wilderness demonstrates that God has not abandoned her.

There is a parallel between the Church today and ancient Israel in Egypt. Israel lived in a society that did not worship the true God, yet God had a purpose for His people and eventually delivered them. Similarly, God's people live amid what Revelation later describes as Babylon, a political, economic, religious, and social system alienated from God and influenced by Satan. The call to come out of Babylon in Revelation 18:4 is both spiritual and, in the context of the end-time events, potentially physical. God's people must separate themselves from the values, practices, and false worship of the world, even while living within it.

Just as Pharaoh pursued Israel after the Exodus, the dragon will pursue the woman in the end-time narrative. The pattern of oppression followed by divine deliverance appears throughout Scripture and becomes an important theme in Revelation 12.

Revelation 12:7 declares,

"And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought."

This passage reveals that the conflict described in Revelation is not merely political or military. There is a spiritual battle behind the visible events taking place on earth.

One thing we learn from this passage is that the spiritual realm has organization and structure. Human societies and military forces operate through established chains of command, with authority and responsibility assigned at various levels. The Roman military provides a historical example. Its forces were organized into units, from the Contubernium, a small group of soldiers, through centuries and cohorts to the legion. This organization allowed the army to operate as a coordinated force rather than as a collection of individuals acting independently.

Scripture also demonstrates that God organized His people for specific responsibilities. In Numbers 1-4, the Israelites were counted and arranged according to their tribes, while the Levites were assigned responsibilities for the tabernacle and its furnishings. Each family had a designated role, including the care of the tabernacle coverings, boards, pillars, sockets, bars, pegs, cords, and the sacred objects used in worship. The Kohathites were responsible for transporting the ark, table, lampstand, altars, and other holy furnishings, while other Levite families cared for the tabernacle's structural components and coverings. These responsibilities were carefully defined, and unauthorized participation in certain sacred duties carried severe consequences.

The organization of Israel's camp and priesthood illustrates that God is a God of order, authority, and assigned responsibility. The spiritual forces described in Revelation also operate within a conflict involving authority and organized opposition. Satan's rebellion is not simply random chaos. He has gathered spiritual forces that oppose God and His people.

From Satan's perspective, this is an existential battle. Revelation 12:5 makes clear that Jesus Christ will rule all nations. Satan knows that his own dominion is temporary and that he will be put away. His rebellion is therefore a desperate attempt to oppose God's purpose, even though he cannot ultimately prevail.

One question this passage can bring about is how do angels fight? Daniel 10:12-14 provides an important background for understanding spiritual conflict. Daniel is told that the heavenly messenger had been opposed by the "prince of the kingdom of Persia" for twenty-one days until Michael came to help. The passage describes spiritual opposition associated with earthly kingdoms and demonstrates that events in the physical world can have a spiritual dimension that human beings cannot see.

Daniel 12:1 further identifies Michael as the great prince who stands watch over the sons of Daniel's people. Michael has a special role in protecting God's people and carrying out God's purposes. These passages indicate that angelic beings can exercise influence and authority in connection with earthly affairs, although the precise nature and limits of that authority are not fully explained.

The Bible describes a conflict that has existed since Satan's rebellion. Satan and his angels have opposed God's purposes, righteous angels, and God's people. The book of Job also demonstrates that Satan's actions are subject to boundaries and allowances set by God. Satan is not equal to God, and he cannot act outside the limits God permits.

Michael's fighting in Revelation 12 fits this biblical pattern of authoritative action. Rather than requiring us to imagine physical combat in human terms, the passage can be understood as Michael leading the heavenly forces that oppose, expel, and restrain Satan and his angels. Revelation 12:7-9 presents a decisive heavenly act that changes Satan's access to heaven and shifts the conflict toward the earth.

The battle will be fierce, and the consequences will be evident in humanity's experience. Satan's fury will be directed against everything that belongs to God. Israel, the Church, and all those who remain faithful to God will face the consequences of this intensified opposition.
