(00:01) well good afternoon and welcome to all of you online it's such a privilege to be here I uh I thought I knew what uh honor your father and mother was I really did I thought ah I got this I'm nearly 70 years old I've mastered this skill and there but the difference between a teacher and a teller is that a teller Masters the skill so in November I went back to figure out exactly what is honoring your father and mother and I started in a deer blind with my grandchildren from there I worked my way to tackling a task that should be never
(00:41) never accomplished and that is to clean my father's garage any of you that have been in my father's garage knows we are in our sixth week of it and we are making progress I would like to ask you today what does five mean to you what does it represent to you the number five it's interesting in my class of orientation I did a project where I had each individual in the class ask what five meant to them and it was just amazing to me that none of them had the same thing that I did what five meant to me it was interesting when I asked the the
(01:26) elementary teacher that had come in to speak in my class about teaching I asked her what was five represent or mean to you and she said excuse me she said five fingers five apples five dice when I asked the English teacher that was in uh room 303 upstairs he said the Roman numeral 5 when I asked the engineer teacher there he said the number five our accounting class said currency the baker my father said measurements which for him uh caught me off guard because he never measured anything the shop teacher said it was a
(02:24) measurement of inches the baseball coach said it was a five tool player here and when I asked somebody who had traveled the world four times who was just down the hall from me he said a five star restaurant interesting five meaning something totally different to all of us what does five mean to me my brother Ron and I were in White Center at Albertson's Store I was 10 he was eight I had just finished the doughnut run Ron has just finished the French Run we had finished everything baked it cleaned it scraped it the proof box
(03:07) cleaned out it looked great my dad came up to me and to Ron and he handed us a 1935 buffalo nickel to each of us now that was 60 years ago and I still hold it in my wallet today a 19 1935 buffalo nickel but it's what he said to us that made the difference when he handed it to us he said this is not pay you are to carry this and with this it represents two things the 1935 is Mom's birthday the year of her birth and the five represents the fifth commandment to honor your father and mother today I'd like to look at one
(04:02) Commandment that has deep significance for our family Society our relationship with our parents and our relationship with our heavenly father the T title of today's message is three things to know about the fifth commandment I'd like to begin over in where the first time the fifth commandment is recorded we'll go over to Exodus 20 and verse 12 Exodus 20 and verse 12 it reads honor your father and your mother that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God has given you it has a promise it was amazing the word honor in the Hebrew is
(04:49) kabat it's Hebrews I mean it's um strongs 3513 it means heavy it means dense it means weighty it means to treat with high respect or with extreme res uh reverence and great exem uh esteem interesting about the Hebrew culture is that the concept Wy is closely resembles honor and Glory as used in describing God's glory and respect due to parents in the book of remembrance is the second time that the fifth commandment is recorded and that's found in Deuteronomy 5 Deuteronomy 5 and verse 16 Deuteronomy 5 and verse 16 we
(05:45) see it says honor your father and your mother as the Lord your God has commanded you that your days may be long and that you may be well with you in the land which the Lord your God has given you I was reminded in a really profound way while hunting in Arkansas with my grandchildren we had just completed the uh fifth commandment in the Commandment book or in our booklet and we were in the the deer blind and I was thanking them for taking time to travel from Arkansas to come visit their great grandfather my dad six of the eight children had never
(06:34) met my grandfather or met my dad their great-grandfather and I was sharing with them what my dad told me after they left he told me how much he appreciated that they made the drive out but more importantly he specifically stated that he appreciated how that each one of them spent time with him not only playing cards helping him in the greenhouse cleaning up the orchard feeding the cow fishing with them over at the venue and as I shared it with them it was they said well what is children what does God say children
(07:13) are and I thought wow that's that's interesting that you would ask that question and what came to mind for me was Proverbs 176 children's children are the crown of an old men and the glory of children is her father well during that time my grandson looked at me and said Granddad do you remember meeting your grandpa wow that took me back to an unbelievable experience something that I hadn't even thought about in years see my dad div uh his family divorced when he was 14 and he and his father were separated and they didn't see eye to eye on a lot of
(08:05) things while we were sitting in a family bible study in 1963 I can remember it as clearly as I'm sitting here today or standing here we were going around and giving what we did well in the family and honoring parents and what we did not do well it was interesting that it started with my mom Shelly was too small at that time but we went around the circle and it came to my dad an unbelievable look that I'll never forget came over my dad when he looked after all we were finished and he said Sunday we will go meet your
(08:48) grandfather I had never met my grandfather I was 8 years old he said I will show you what honor looks like it was interesting I can tell you exactly where I sat in the car I can tell you exactly how long the trip was I can even tell you exactly how many miles it was from Mount Vernon to Day Creek 18 miles east and as we turned up that dirt road that long driveway there were two huge Belgium workhorses that I later learned where Belgium workhorses were in the pasture a beautiful Barn well-kept a wonderful Cedar sided house on the right
(09:32) hand side and we drove up there and it was amazing CU I will never forget my dad's first words to my dad or to his dad that I remember as we came up to there we drove up the Dobermans were dogs were running around the car he there this stocky short barrel chested thick hair but with a crew top with a crew cut a flat top looking came out and he looked down like who is this in my yard we pulled up my dad got out and he went up and he said I'd like to introduce you to your six grandchildren it made a whole different
(10:26) impression he it it actually it was silence in the car as we got out by one by one and were introduced by name to him and my grandfather invited us into the house and it's it's amazing I don't hear my grandfather's voice I don't hear my dad's voice I don't hear anything going on what amazed me was that my dad and his dad were talking not just talking but there was a there was a tone and we know tone is 40% communication there was a tone of respect going back and forth I also remember the dogs that were at the door staring at us with the
(11:08) door open none of us moved off the couch but I remember that clearly it is my purpose today to identify explain review and discuss three vital important aspects of the fifth commandment the te the teach teaching is relevant for us today as it was in the day of Moses as it will be for us in the kingdom of God the first thing I'd like you to know about the fifth commandment is the fifth commandment acts as a bridge the fifth commandment acts as a bridge I did not come up with that we were sitting in the deer blind and my
(11:53) grandson said to me you know Granddad the title to your sermon should be the view of the fifth commandment through the lens of a deer blind well that's pretty good that's better than what I came up with on there but it was interesting because he says you know when we were reading the The Ten Commandments booklet page 34 told us that you know the the fifth commandment acts as a bridge I said what how do you know it's on page 34 he said well when you told me the story Grandpa was 34 when you went to visit he was 14 when he
(12:33) separated he was 34 went there so by association the power of a story I'd like to read from you uh from the book our booklet The Ten Commandments on page 34 entitled the foundation for Success the fifth commandment honor your father and mother acts as a bridge between the first four Commandments which focuses on our relationship with God and the last six Commandments which focuses on our relationship with people demonstrating how our relationship with God should be reflected in our interaction with our parents setting the foundation for how
(13:14) we should treat others in society you know it's amazing that you you think back on Matthew 22:37 where Christ says was asked teacher which is the great commandment of the law what did Christ say he says right there in verse 37 you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart with all your soul with all your mind this is a first and great commandment but you'll notice right down in verse 39 Christ bridged the two he bridged the two great Commandments in verse 39 he says and the second is like it you shall love your
(13:55) neighbor as yourself on these two Commandments hang all of the law and Prophets well how is it that it is a bridge how is the fifth commandment a bridge number one number one it teaches us to focus on God first when we focus on God first the first four Commandments emphasize that the primary duty of worship and respect and obedience to God and when we put God first everything else Falls in place brings to mind Matthew 6:33 seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be added unto you the
(14:34) second thing is in being a bridge the fifth commandment being a bridge is to recognize that our parents as God's Representatives this is one thing that I really learned over the past month especially spending every day with my dad six days a week eight or more hours I was learning by doing I was closing that Gap map between knowledge and application it was interesting because in something he said made me go and look this up that he said in while we were in the in the shop he said he referred to Elliot's commentary and I'd like to read
(15:18) from Elliot's commentary for English readers commenting on Exodus 20 about God's representing our our parent we as parents representing God the mention of both the father and mother highlights the equal importance for both parental figures in the biblical family structure in ancient Israel the family was primarily social unit and both the parents were to be honored and respected this due me this dual mention emphasizes that the Commandment applied equally to both parents countering the cultural tendency of the of prioritizing
(16:02) honor for the father over the mother it is reflected in the biblical view of a family as a sacred institution where both the parents are revered honored and obeyed and are God's Representatives the third thing is that the fifth commandment Bridges us to human relations the fifth commandment marks the transition and bridging from the relationships with God to our relationship with other people the remaining six Commandments deal with the interaction within society and for those of you that have been in public education when we did
(16:48) away with respect for authority and respect for there we were on a quick downward slide in education that will be reversed in the soon coming Kingdom the fifth commandment teaches us to honor God to honor God when we when uh and as we honor God we will honor our parents and our neighbors to paraphrase the 10th commandment booklet page 34 through 36 in one sentence or at least two the first commandment requires mankind to give honor to God God's High office of authority as Creator the fifth commandment requires men to honor the highest human
(17:38) office that of a parent this commandment then forms the bridge between the two great Commandments of God's law in review of the first the fifth commandment serves as a bridge a bridge command between the first four Commandments which focus on our relationship with God and the last six we acknowledge the authority and structure that God has established in our lives the fifth commandment calls for us to respect the family unit which God designed as the foundational building block of society the second thing I want you to
(18:28) know about the fifth commandment is that honoring parents is part of being holy I had no concept of this until this week in particular when we were sharing stories amongst my brother and my sister and my dad and I was there and the comment that my dad made that the fifth commandment is a direct command from God the Father my granddaughter put it this way when we're in the blind it was yeah it's a it's a direct command it was written with his own finger so true so true the different perspectives to honor our father and
(19:18) mother is not merely a suggestion it's a direct command from God and is a Commandment that reflects our pursuit of Holiness and what does God God wanting our children he wants Godly children Malachi 2:15 tells us but did he not make them one having remnants of the spirit and why one God he seeks Godly Offspring God wants holy reverent righteous obedient children those are the questions I asked myself this week do I fill all four of those do I submit do I Surrender do I sacrifice do I serve as I ask those questions I'm
(20:17) reminded of what Peter says back in 1 Peter 1 and verse 16 1 Peter 1:16 you know it's interesting Peter and reaches back into the Old Testament and gives proof that God expects us to be like him perfect in 1 Peter 1 verse 16 Peter quotes Leviticus 11:44 and it states be holy for I am Holy we'll read 1 Peter 1 reading verses 13-16 therefore G up your loins of your mind be sober and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is is be bought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ as obedient children not conforming yourself to the
(21:11) former lusts as in your ignorance but as he who is called you is Holy you also be holy in all your conduct because it is written quoting from Leviticus 11:44 be holy for I am Holy well Moses connects the fifth commandment quickly if you'll turn with me to Leviticus 19 Leviticus 19 and verse3 Leviticus 19 1-3 Moses gets a direct command from God a direct command Moses reads here we'll read in verse 1 through3 and the Lord spoke to Moses saying speak to the congregation of the children of Israel and say to them you
(22:12) shall be holy for I am the Lord your God am Holy every one of you should Revere his mother and his father and keep my Sabbath where to be holy revere it's interesting the word revere in strongs is number 3034 is defined as fear reverence honor and respect Vines describes it as keep watch or guard Brown and driver's commentary refers to it as to stand in awe remember what Christ said in Matthew 22:37 when Christ said this is the first and great commandment and then Christ said You shall love the Lord your God with
(23:05) all your heart I guess this would be part four of the four sermons that we've heard over the past or three sermons over the past weeks but it's just not honoring your father and mother that that it's just not about that it's not just about obedience honor our father and mother starts in the heart and it's a matter of the heart when we dis honor our parent and when we demonstrate and say things that are disrespectful it hurts in ways that I never knew until my dad shared with me this week I asked him unfortunately what was the most
(23:52) dishonoring thing I ever did to him it wasn't about obedience it wasn't about doing what I was supposed to have completed his disappointment in me was very specific it's interesting that in the way that he said it cut me to the quick he said David R. Goethals that's my middle name you need to stop being so pushy I'm your father honor your father said well dad will never get this shop cleaned if I don't do something and he goes this is not about cleaning the shop this is about building a relationship now for those of you that
(24:55) know my dad there I never quite understood why he did what he did sometimes but he had a reason he always would ask me what's your motive he always had a reason and that reason was God family work when those three got out of order it would change it would change how he would react and did and when I said to him Dad how am I being pushy he says you're looking to see what you want to do not what needs to be done changed my whole perspective so as I went through the shop and we took it there I said what is the one thing that is your biggest
(25:46) irritant what just tell me straight up he says I want to do stuff and I can't I said so let's fix it what do we do one of the great lessons I learned this week is find what your parents want to accomplish and go help them finish it no matter how long it takes no matter what effort it takes no matter the financial costs nothing go do it it will change your life as it did mine what was interesting was he wanted the radio alarm saw down to where he could pull on it so I cut the legs off a table rebuilt it lowered the table saw
(26:30) moved the band saw moved his uh there so he couldn't see when he was on the lay so I put it in front of the there but the interesting part was where the honor came was for me serving him asking him what he wanted do we ever think about that when we ask God what does he want from us how do we honor him the lessons that I learned were amazing and and this is what I would like to share with you from this week in our discussion between my brothers my sisters in there when we talked about honoring our father and mother when we dishonor our
(27:14) parents we demonstrate that our hearts are far from God not obeying not coming when we're called Talking Back Being rebellious disobedient disrespectful to Authority rolling our eyes turning our backs on our parents and walking away displaying disrespectful attitude displaying Defiance disrespectful body language tone and outright Rebellion what does that all say I can say it in just a couple of words I want to be in control it's not a about me being in control that's what I learned this week we have a heavenly father who has
(28:07) given us an amazing calling an absolutely amazing calling and sometimes physical activity teaches us spiritual lessons our actions speak louder than our words what did Satan say when he rebelled against God the father he said Satan said in his heart let's read it over in Isaiah 14 verse 12 Isaiah 14 verses 12- 14 let's read what Satan said because Satan said in his heart let's read it right here starting in verse 12 how you have are fallen from Heaven oh Lucifer son of the morning how you have cut down to the ground you who
(29:11) weaken the Nations for you have said in your heart I will Ascend into heaven I will exalt the throne above the stars of God and I will also sit on the Mount of the congregation on the farthest side of the North I will Ascend above the heights of the cloud I will be like the most high it's not about me it's not about us if our heart is not right our attitude will not be right it's interesting that we know that sin separates us our iniquities we know that in Isaiah 59:2 but think of what Christ says in Matthew 158 18 but those who but those
(30:12) things which are proceed out of the mouth come from the heart when I asked my granddaughter we were in The Blind we were watching some doze in the field and we were talking and she said to me she said you know as we've been talking I've realized that I I do something that I didn't realize I did I talk back to Mom and Dad a lot and I asked her what does talking back do what it was talking back do what does it represent what does it display her answer was simple my heart is far from my parents when our hearts are far from
(30:58) something our thought process Chang so when our heart produces a thought we know that in Proverbs 4:23 that keep your heart with all diligence for out of the heart or it the heart Springs forth the issues of life when the heart produces thought what does thought produce Steven covey and the author of the book Seven Habits of Highly Effective teen said said that thought produces action action produces habit habit produces character and character determines our destiny so how do we change that how do we change that a humble teachable heart
(31:45) as David said in Matthew or in Psalms 25:4 show me your way teach me your paths Lead Me In Your Truth or as David said when he wanted forgiveness created in me a clean heart and a steadfast spirit in Psalms 51:10 so what do we learn what have we learned about honor our parents as part of being holy honor and parents is a Divine command and a path to Holiness it aligns with God's desire for his people to be holy reflecting his authority and seeking to produce Godly Offspring second disrespecting parents reflects
(32:36) our hearts our distance from God and third aligning our hearts with God allows us to repent and it allows us to draw closer to him as it says in James 4:8 if we'll draw close to Him He will draw close to us and when our hearts are submissive to God honoring parents becomes a natural expression of our pursuit of Holiness in all aspects of our life the powerful example of my father going to visit his father stays with me to this day and when my grandson asked me while we were in The Blind how many times is the fifth commandment referred to in the
(33:25) Bible I didn't have an answer where' that come from he goes well I was just thinking if it's twice it's got to be in the New Testament someplace I said well okay I know a couple so let's look at it so we looked at nine different places in the Bible that the fifth commandment is mentioned we've read three of them already Deuteronomy we've read uh Exodus 20 and verse 12 Deuteronomy 5:116 and Leviticus uh 19 and verse 1 through3 we've read those but there are six times in the New Testament that the fifth commandment is
(34:08) referred to or mentioned three times the young ruler in Matthew 19:19 Luke 10:19 and also in Mark I'm sorry Mark 10:19 and Luke 18:20 and two times Christ talks to the scribes and Pharisees about Corbin and the traditions of men in the fifth commandment in Matthew 15 and verse 4 and Mark 7 and verse2 and then there's one powerful one and that is what Paul says in Ephesians 6:2 when he refers to the fifth commandment as the first commandment with the promise what do all nine of these scriptures have in in common number one is that there is
(35:01) no limit or exception or time frame on honoring your parent not even the hard to honor parent not even the hard to honor parent God put them in authority and there Christ gave us an excellent example to follow of what it looks like to honor his father in Heaven Christ honored his father for eternity by perfectly fulfilling his will on Earth through the life of obedience love sacrifice and ultimate ultimately culminating in his death on the stake thereby bringing glory to his father forever we have many scriptures we could
(35:51) turn to but in a synopsis I would like to just read this to you is what came from the dear blind a week of discussion about how Christ obeyed his father my grandchildren enlightened me in a different way they said Christ obeyed and respected his Heavenly Father by consistently prioritizing and following the will of his heavenly father I changed their words because they were theirs just to make it flow but it was pretty powerful for them to identify priorities habit three and you know prioritizing life where things
(36:38) are understanding that is more important to pray before you make your bed than to make your B bed and pray is a a conversation that I'd never had before it was interesting following the will of our heavenly father in every aspect of life never acting on his own initiative submitting to his father father's plan forever when he is not to and I'm Excuse me just SP and submitting to his father's plan even when he has difficulty as seen in the statements and it was and it was actually enjoyable turning to these statements with my
(37:23) grandchildren as they brought a different perspective to it saying I came down from heaven not to do my will how many times do we want to do our will but the will of him that sent me quoting John 6:38 in Christ's prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane not as I will but as you will Matthew 26:39 Christ honored his father and mother his physical parents how do we know that he never sinned Hebrews 4:15 tells us that it says that we do not have a he a high priest that cannot sympathize with our weakness but was in all points
(38:13) tempted as we are yet without sin Christ left us a perfect example we can look over in Luke 2 and verse 15 Luke 2:15 where he committed to his parents after they had gone to Nazareth there but nowhere in the Bible can you find that Christ ever disrespected his heavenly father or his physical parents a wonderful example for us to follow so what is the application of the fifth of the fifth commandment to honor your father and mother what is it that you and I can do that will not only honor our parents but honor our heavenly
(39:01) father and our relationship we have with them remember what it says and Paul says in Colossians 3 and verse 20 children obey your parents in all things for this is well and pleasing to God to the Lord we know that so what is it that we can do no matter what age we are in here what are specific things that we can do because understanding is application and Proverbs 9:10 says that if we understand and what understanding is is knowledge of the Holy One and if we have knowledge of the Holy One then we should be able to look to our parents
(39:45) even when our parents don't agree with us even when their traditions and their behavior is not Godlike we are still to honor them we are are still to be their children not separating ourselves because what friction causes is separation and when it separation gets so hot then there and what do we do we shut them off what itms it love time submitting surrendering sacrificing and and becoming a servant all things Our God our Holy Father in Heaven wants us to accomplish so what did I learn this week this is what I'd like to pass on to
(40:42) you do not listen to respond listen to understand it was amazing when I looked and I would found myself jumping to conclusions running ahead being pushy doing things that were not respectful reminded me of a a lecture I did in my orientation class on pretend listening it's called pseudo listening and pseudo listening is pretend listening that acts as though you listening but your mind is somewhere else but you know what's amazing about pseudo listening you do two things you give a verbal uhhuh or you give a nod thinking that
(41:35) you are a part of the conversation when you're not this week I learned to listen and what I heard was a whole new depth of respect for me to what had actually been taught my whole life that I never understood and that is you make time for what you value most do you value your parents do you spend time with your parents do you find activities that they enjoy do you take time to plan a trip an activity what is it that we do that allows us to show that we care right here in this audience we've had amazing examples that I've learned
(42:36) from and I've been able to apply I have a totally different appreciation for caretakers now based upon not only what I've seen but what I've learned the second thing I learned is follow the house rules doesn't matter how old we are follow the house rules there's rules and boundaries there accept those boundaries be respectful of them be kind be generous share your children with your parents make the effort why because like it said in Proverbs 17 and: 6 children's children are are the crown of an old man be involved in their
(43:35) lives show them you care see the need fill the need provide for their needs and as they get elderly those needs increase we have to become a greater servant and in doing so there is a spiritual reward that comes with it that is that we understand that honoring and the giving that is given back to us through that service and when we honor our parents we honor God the Father treat your parents with respect and wisdom this summer I ran into a situation that I had never run into with my grandson and I was going to act in a way
(44:20) but instead I picked up the phone and I called my dad and I said hey Dad you got a minute how would you deal with this situation I told it to him and within just a pause I'll quote exactly what he said Son you can't discipline them for what you haven't taught them you can't discipline them for what you haven't taught them take every opportunity to teach you may have to reteach but here was the Nugget here was the Nugget do not correct your parent their parents or undermine their approach use wisdom be patient and more
(45:17) than anything be the example and the light upon the hill an additional thing I Learned was about tone tone and body language we know that body language is 53% of all communication and tone is 40% and words is seven as we know from Seven Habits of Highly Effective teens both in Sean covey and stephen Covey's book on there but our body language says a lot no matter what our age when we don't look at our parents when they're talking to us doesn't show that we're actually listening listening to them eyes are the window to the
(46:02) soul it means that you have attention ask for attention give attention be polite and respectful give your full attention don't be a pseudo listener treat your parents with dignity that's really hard when you're doing health care it's embarrassing it hurts there but the whole key is that you show that you love them you take care of them and you will do whatever it takes to provide for them language as a as a parent gets older the filter gets thinner don't correct your parents be the light be the example when they ask
(46:55) you to read to you read to them when they tell you to do something do it but in your mind understand that they are the one that God put in authority over us encouragement the incredible power of encouragement don't let your parents dwell on the negative I don't care what age don't let them dwell on the negative give them something positive to look forward to the Feast of Tabernacles and the memories Thanksgiving Hunting Fishing Hobbies activities make yourself a part of their lives no matter what they believe no
(47:47) matter what they feel they need to express listen be kind be gentle be supportive one thing I really learned was that when your parents need help be there when they need help be there doesn't matter our age but being there is different not just in body but in heart and in spirit in effort in fin Finance whatever it takes honor your parents and you will in turn honor God recognize when your parents are depressed and find the antidote whether it's a scripture an activity an act hobby something that takes their mind something that occupies
(48:47) their hands and in turn shows your love for them and the one of which I really appreciate was what we heard last week pray with and for your parents it's powerful incredibly powerful to hear when your parents use language that you never heard them use before in hearing the stories of my dad this week there was one interesting thing that really showed to me my dad never talked bad about his dad ever not once did I hear a bad word I learned that you never speak ill of your parents to anyone at any time or any place no
(49:48) matter what they've done you honor your father and mother and there's one really important one that I'd like to share with you and that is as my dad quoted to me Proverbs 27:10 out of just out of nowhere on THS on Wednesday my mom's birthday he said remember this son with every elderly person that dies a library of knowledge disappears ask and you shall find seek and you shall know knock and it shall be opened unto you that all takes time that all takes time so honoring our parents might be a challenge especially
(50:43) in difficult family Dynamics however in precisely that moment that's when we fulfill God's commands to extend honor reverence obedience and respect to those who give us life the very ones God put in authority over us so in closing we have identified explained reviewed and discussed three things about the fifth commandment it only scratches the surface one the fifth commandment acts as a bridge two honoring our parents as part of being holy three there's no time limit or exception in honoring our parents let us remember that the fifth
(51:38) commandment is not merely a rule but a vital lifegiving commandment with a promise one our response to the fifth commandment is a matter of the heart in implementing God's direct command each time time we honor our parents we honor God we are living out God's will for us to produce Godly Offspring and to reflect his authority in our lives and becoming holy as he is Holy in conclusion I'd like to read Deuteronomy 5 Deuteronomy 5 in closing Deuteronomy 5 and verse 16 and with these words I want you to to think on these words write them on
(52:32) your heart and on your mind and demonstrate them in our actions as an example and a light to our parents Deuteronomy 5 and verse 16 honor your father and your mother as the Lord your God has commanded you that your day may be long and that it may be well with you in the land which the Lord your God has given you
