Knowledge, Understanding, and Wisdom

Good and Bad

Throughout the Bible, God emphasizes that we should seek knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. That means both 1.) godly knowledge, understanding and wisdom plus 2.) physical and mental knowledge, understanding, and wisdom that are factually true and in harmony with the Bible. The Bible also frequently warns even God’s people against all kinds of deceptions, counterfeits, evil knowledge, and trivial pursuits. A common danger for God’s people is illustrated in the Parable of the Sower by the seed sown among the weeds that dies because it is crowded out by the weeds. The “weeds” can be good things as well as evil things because spending too much time with non-essential “good” things can crowd out Bible study, prayer, and a close relationship with God. We have amazing minds and a very special calling. We must not pollute our minds and hearts but keep them pure. And we must not waste our minds but steadily seek to make our thoughts and ways more and more like God’s thoughts and ways (Isaiah 55:1-9).
