Our Hope Is in God

Dante Alighieri wrote the epic 14th-century poem "Divine Comedy" that established in Christendom an idea of what hell is like. He wrote of being guided through three areas (the Inferno, the Purgatorio, and the Paradiso). When he reached the gate to the worst place in the Inferno, there was a sign saying "Abandon all hope, you who enter here." This world is on a hopeless doom and gloom downward spiral. In contrast, we who follow Christ see the trials and dispair of today, but balance it against what we know with certainty will happen tomorrow (based on God's faithfulness and promise).
