This is part two of the sermon that I'm going to be giving on the scientific basis for the Bible. I plan to give one more after this because I do want to cover Job 38 through 41, but I didn't finish last week what I had in mind about just going through some of the common questions that youths ask about the church. And it's very important—I need my book there that I'm going to be talking on— a book that brings out—let me see here. Got it.
This is called Already Gone. It's a book by Ken Ham and Britt Beamer. Ken Ham is one of the heads of this scientific creationism. There's a creation museum over in Cincinnati that he helped build. And of course, they have a movement which tries to go back to explain Genesis and all the record that you have of history back to around 7,000 years in time. But they did a very interesting study in which he mentions that when they started interviewing the young adults in the United States and why they left the church, they found out that they're leaving before college age. They're actually starting to leave from elementary school and high school. Basically, they say mentally when they are challenged by the schools about their creation account, about evolution, and they don't have a good answer, they start having a disconnect between what they hear in church and what they hear in the schools and in the television and in the movies. And so eventually, the television, the movies, and the schools went out. Only a third of the children that attend school, attend church regularly in these Protestant churches, or Catholic churches for that matter as well, only a third stay in the church. Two-thirds eventually leave, and it's very alarming. In this book, Already Gone, they interviewed about a thousand of these young adults that have left the church in their 20s, and they came to the startling conclusion that what the churches were providing was not meeting the youth's questions. It wasn't giving them the answers, and so many of them just felt that the Bible is full of fables, that Genesis is not a historical account, the creation account is not accurate. And so basically, what these men concluded was that the church provided Bible stories such as the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve, about the creation account, about the Tower of Babel, about the flood, and since they didn't have any good answers when they went to the schools, even in high school, where they were taught evolution and taught about scientific methodologies and the history where many of the teachers just say that the Bible isn't accurate. That sows doubts in kids' minds.
Basically, the church provides Bible stories, but not a belief system that is solid, that they can defend when they go to the outside world with the science that the kids are given.
The kids have doubts. They disconnect between what they hear in church and what they hear in school and what they hear among their friends. And I know it happened to me when I was 17. I already believed in evolution. I believed that God created the first cell, and then human beings just sort of evolved eventually, and that the Genesis account wasn't accurate. It was only when I came into contact with this church that I saw the other side of the story, and I started seeing that there was a scientific basis, and that changed my whole life. So this book starts out showing the churches in England. Since 1969, there have been 1,500 churches that have been closed down. A church like this one in Liverpool became a discotheque. They use it for dancing. I think it finally changed hands, but sold to something else. They make them into offices nowadays. Another church here on the left.
Here's the front of it, and here it became a restaurant. So you go to church, and you find using them for restaurants, for office space, for storage, for warehouses, because people, especially this generation, has quit going to church. Right now in England, which used to be the cornerstone of the Christian movement with missionaries going around the world in the 19th, 20th century, now only 6.3% of the British attend church. And Bible-based churches, which you would call more fundamentalist churches, only 2.5% of the population go to these churches. And they predict that in the next 40 years, it'll go down to less than 1% of the population.
The problem is that the kids are leaving churches first mentally and later physically. In other words, in their mind, they're not convinced with what the churches are telling them.
They're told Bible stories, and they're not solid about their own beliefs of what they think is true. They don't have the answers to tough scientific questions, and then there's a disconnect in their mind. They disconnect what they're hearing from the church and when they go outside, what they hear from others in this secular society. I'm going to read from page 123 of this book.
And it mentions here the problem that you have. It says, church can be defined many ways. It could be simply defined as a group of individuals that prioritize the sharing of the Word of God and live by the principles of the Word of God. That's what the church should be. But the problem is, nowadays, these kids are not listening to a church that teaches them real beliefs. Notice here in page 109, I thought this was very interesting. It's called the placebo effect in churches. Medical researchers often talk about a phenomenon called the placebo effect. When trying to determine the effectiveness of a drug or treatment, sometimes researchers will intentionally give a group of people a pill that looks like the new medicine but really isn't. Amazingly, the people taking the false medicine sometimes feel better, even though the pill is not actually helping them at all. And I remember my dad doing that with patients that would call him, and he'd call the pharmacist and say, well, just give him a placebo. And the person later on would call and say, oh, I feel a lot better because he knew it was more mental than physical that the person was having. A similar thing is happening in the church. In our efforts to slow the flood of young adults who are leaving, we often give the church a placebo. We try to restore cultural relevancy without restoring biblical relevancy. What does that mean? It says, becoming culturally cool can feel like it helps for a while, but it's really just a placebo, a band-aid for such a deeper disease. The idea that a lot of churches have is tell them what they want to hear. Make them feel good about themselves. That's not what the doctor ordered. Yes, we need a good bedside manner, but the church is sick and it needs to be told the truth. One of my big frustrations, says the author Ken Ham, with this placebo effect comes down to even music, church music. I have visited hundreds and hundreds of churches. Everywhere I go, music seems to be the central issue. Even in conservative churches, everyone tries to make a big deal out of praise and worship. We think that if we make it dynamic, energetic, and fit the style of the generation we're trying to reach, the epidemic will be stopped and young people will start flooding back into the church. That's simply not the case. Our research showed that music is not a fundamental factor in young adults choosing to leave or stay at church, but the preaching of God's Word is. He says he went to a church.
Eventually, the other pastor backed down when they were talking about whether the message was more important than the music, and the music won. He says that day we had 20 minutes of praise and worship, 20 minutes of message, and 25 minutes of worship at the end. The Word of God was put in second place. The placebo was given precedent. The real medicine was given a token amount of time. So this is what we are facing in today's society, the tendency to water things down, to not get down to things that have to do with your belief system.
It's more of your feeling good about yourself, which is what many of these churches around us are doing. He also mentions, and the crux of the matter here in page 113. It says the Bible is not some, quote, pie-in-the-sky philosophical book.
It's a real book that is really connected to the real world. It is a history book that connects to dirt, fossils, stones, bones, tsunamis, earthquakes, oceans, mountains, death, and so on. It has everything to do with geography, biology, anthropology, and sociology. The Word of God has never changed, but the church's perception of the Word of God changed when it failed to engage the scientific community on matters of fact as well as faith.
See, this started over a hundred years ago, back in Darwin's day in the 1850s, 60s, where basically the church has just said, oh well, I guess evolution is right. I guess we have to throw away all of these biblical accounts in Genesis. That's where the erosion started, as he mentions here. Our society is now immersed in secularism, which means wordliness. It means just leave God out of the picture. Enjoy yourself, have pleasure, just deal with secular and not religious issues. That's the focus. It's absolutely essential that we learn to defend the Bible and the Christian faith for the sake of our faith and our children's faith. I firmly believe that we are now in the era of, quote, the Greeks.
Yet our churches and Sunday schools are still teaching us, like, quote, Jews. In other words, a Jewish community, they preached to themselves because they were all brethren. And yet you had to deal with the Greek world. See, the Greeks wanted answers. They wanted something more than just stories about the Bible. And so we have to engage this world. We have to show them that we have nothing to be apologetic or to ask forgiveness about when we come to the biblical record. We have to be strong. We have to show that we have very solid answers for the questions that are being posed.
I'd like to go now to hear the subject of the creation account. And we have in Genesis 1, verses 1, where it tells us that God, in the beginning, created the universe and the earth as we have it. That is called the original creation. And then in verse 2, as it mentions here, the Hebrew, haya, or was, it's better translated, became and the earth became chaotic and in confusion. Something marred it. Something caused destruction.
And then we have from Genesis 1, verses 3, on the renewal of the earth. The earth is what we see it in the past 6,000 years. Now, I covered the scriptures in Job 38.7. It tells us that the angels chatted for joy when they saw the creation. This was before human beings. We know Lucifer eventually rebelled, was thrown here on the earth. There was a lot of, there was warfare, just like Satan is going to try to do as now the second time before Christ comes back.
There's going to be war, again, between the angelic beings, one-third of them who went along with Satan. Now, we do not have all the details. When Christ comes back, we're going to get all of the details filled in. What happened? How long did it take? All we have is the evidence of the earth that there's been great devastation. And there is a world that happened before Adam and Eve, and we see that from the geologic record.
We have over a mile of geologic, what they call strata. It's an average of a mile deep, with different layers of creatures that were buried in a pretty orderly fashion. You don't see them all mixed up. You don't see the trilobites mixed with the dinosaurs or human beings with the dinosaurs, and that has been found in every one of the continents.
Like I said before, oil geologists who drill, they want to drill and find oil, which is primarily in one layer, which is called the carboniferous layer, where a lot of the plant and animal life was buried and became coal and oil. And they can find it because there is an orderly succession here and there around the earth. Like I mentioned about evolution, there are many things that are wrong with this account.
Basically, here is the way the geologic column, if you want to call it, or the strata. First of all, you have the Cambrian layer, and then it goes all the way up. You have the Ordovician, the Silurian, the Devonian. You have later on the Permian, big destruction. And then you have the reptile world, called the Mesozoic world, that's divided into three areas, which Triassic, Jurassic, and then the Cretaceous. And then you finally have mammal life up here. If you're a geologist, you study, especially paleontology, basically you go to China and you find all of these Cambrian layers in its place. There's no mixture. You know, you don't find rabbits with reptiles, with dinosaurs, you find a pretty orderly layer.
Now, evolution cannot explain the emergence of the cell. How many of you, when you went to school, remember the Miller-Urey experiment? Can I see your hands? Miller-Urey experiment? Well, that was, you know, where they said that these two scientists over here in the University of Chicago, they put up some test tubes and they mixed gas and water and some different types of minerals. And then they warmed it all up, they waited a couple of days, and they put electricity into it, trying to imitate primitive atmospheric conditions at the beginning, and what did they get as a result? A type of a tar, which did produce some amino acids, which are the building blocks of life. They did get to that level. That is as far as scientists have been able to get anywhere from non-life to life, just the creation of amino acids. Amino acids are just the building blocks, but now what they've never been able to do is how do you get these loose blocks to form an elegant and functional house with all the blocks in the right place? It's not enough to get the bricks. You've got to put them all together because that's what the cell is all about. It's like a functional house. This comparable house would also include a foundation, walls, doors, windows, the roof. You'd have to have electrical power to operate it and a sewer system. In all of this, you're going to just mix it up in a batch and come up with a functional cell. They have not gotten close to it, and they've been doing it for 50 years. As Sir Fred Hoyle, the late British astronomer and mathematician, says about the Miller-Urey experiment, the building blocks of proteins can therefore be produced by natural means. But this is far from proving that life could have evolved in this way. No one has shown that the correct arrangements of amino acids, like the orderings and enzymes, can be produced by this method. A junkyard contains all the bits and pieces of a Boeing 747 dismembered and in disarray. You know, you get enough, get one of these huge junkyards with cars and with all kinds of pieces together, you could have basically the components of it. He says, a whirlwind happens to blow through the yard. What is the chance that after its passage, a fully assembled 747 ready to fly will be found standing there, so small as to be negligible, even if a tornado were to blow through enough junkyards to fill the whole universe? In other words, if you had all of this mixture, and throughout the entire universe, you could never get a functional 747. And a cell is even a greater challenge because you have to have a 747 that can reproduce itself. Because one of the components of a cell is that it can self-replicate itself.
That is why they have not even gotten close to it. Here are the features of this cell with all of its different components. This is what you have to come up with. And there aren't any cells that are simpler than the two types that are mentioned here, the prokaryotes and the eukaryotes, which are the ones that have the nucleus. Here are the features. They possess DNA, a metabolic system. They reproduce. They grow. They have stimulus to response. They're goal-directed. And I'd like to read this point about it. Yeah.
This is what they share. This is what the two types of cells that I've mentioned, one with a nucleus, the other one without it, information processing, storage, and retrieval, artificial languages, and their decoding systems, error detection, correction, and proofreading devices for quality control, digital data embedding technology, transportation and distribution systems, automated parcel addressing, similar to zip codes and UPS labels. So you see, when they are produced, they are marked and branded so then they can be taken to the proper place. And assembly processes employing prefabrication and modular construction. And finally, self-reproducing robotic manufacturing plants. So that's what you have to do to get a cell going. You think something can just evolve from non-matter like that? See, scientists have not faced the music. They have not faced the facts. That evolution cannot explain how life emerged. And of course, the other one I've mentioned, a chicken or egg dilemma about what you have first, the information or the machinery to program that produces the product. You have software or hardware. Hardware is produced through software. Software is no good without hardware. So how do you do that with a cell? DNA information, as I have mentioned, if you piled up a stack of books, it would go all the way to the moon. That's 250,000 miles. And that you would have 500 times of stacks of books going. That's in the pinhead, the volume of a pinhead of DNA. It has the information equivalent to a pile of books going from the earth to the moon 500 times. You think that could have evolved?
And evolution just has two principal mechanisms, mutations and natural selection. It is not shown to bring about novelty or new information. All it can do is just separate the mutations. As we know, human beings do have mutations, but they're not positive. Nobody wants to have another nose. Nobody wants to have three eyes or something. And unfortunately, we see cases of people born that way, but it's always something wrong with the system. It's not something that's improving. And I'd like to focus on the Cambrian explosion, because this is one of the best arguments against evolution that exists. Here we have, at the beginning of the fossil record, if you recall the slide where we had the fossil, the Cambrian explosion is at the beginning of the fossil record, where you have 32 of the 33 basic body forms that appear in the geologic record. This is a replica. This is our little trilobite. You've got all kinds of different worms. You've got creatures. Some of them look pretty strange, but some of them we'd recognize, too. Here's the beginning, the first prototype of a fish with a notar cord or a vertebra with backbone, the spinal cord. So the seas were filled with this at the beginning of the Cambrian period. Now, body types, what are called phylla in plural, are the basic forms that then there's variation to them. Let me just show you an example.
Now, what do you think is the, in electronics, appliances, do you recognize what this is? This is the first toaster invented. Pretty primitive. Pretty primitive. But you see, that is the toaster form. Then you improve it. There are variations to it. But this is the phylum toaster. See, the first one that comes out, that's the toughest, because you can always improve it, but it's already got a place where you can put the toasts on either side. And here's the heating units. You've got electricity. You've got a plug-in. You've got some switches. Turn them on. See, from there, we get all the modern toasters. And you've got some in bakeries that are huge toasters. But you see, it all comes from the basic body form of this appliance. Okay, you recognize this one. This is the first automobile. This is the body form from which the rest of the automobiles were developed. And you had improvements. Of course, this is very different than the cars that we drive around today. Look at the steering wheel. Just a little old thing running around here and just very basic. And yet, that was the great invention. Because once you get the body form correct, you can always improve upon it. You can modernize it. So again, what I am stressing is that at the first level, the geologic record, you have all of these different body forms, which again will eventually develop more. Some will become extinct. But you do not start with a small cell evolving, like Charles Darwin said. You actually have all of these basic body forms all coming up at the same time. And here's another one. Okay. This is one of the first refrigerators. Now, you might have a hard time identifying it, but it does have the little compressor here, and it does produce cold air. You can keep things cold inside. So you see from there to big industrial refrigerators, there's a lot of changes, but you still have the basic body type. It's a refrigerator. It's a toaster. It's a car. And so in the Cambrian level, you have these different types of creatures that throughout the rest of the 500 million years that they say, we are not sure how long it is, but from then on, you do not have novelty. You do not see these body types being introduced throughout the record. You have them at the beginning, and then you have all kinds of developments. You know, we have the, we are part of the, what they call chordate level of the phylum chordates, which means we have a spinal cord. And that puts us together in the class with all the creatures that have spinal cords. But they started at the Cambrian level. Then we have the first airplane, the Wright Brothers. And certainly it's a lot different than a Boeing 747, but you still have the basic ability to fly. It just increased the wingspan, increased the materials, put a stronger motor. But you see, there is no more real novelty. There is not something new to this basic form that does its job in a much more elementary level. And finally, you have the first submarine. That's very different than the submarines we have today. Some are longer than this church building. Just huge submarines, but they all developed from the basic structure. And then finally, we have one of the first washing machines made out of wood, a little barrel. Now, that's very different than the fancy washing machines today, but you see, the body type is there. So going back, see, when we have all of these appearing, you have the sponges, you have the corals, you have the arthropods, which are the trilobites, you have the chordates with the fish, you have all these clams. See, they all appear at the beginning. And scientists cannot explain how at the beginning you don't have something evolving before that time. These all appear, they're hard-bodied creatures, and they all, the basic body forms appear at the beginning. See, evolution cannot explain that. That contradicts completely what evolution has.
Now, how about the biblical account of creation of the universe?
The Big Bang was something that goes very well, along with the first verse of Genesis. In the beginning, God created the universe, and the universe pops out of nothing and expands, and that is what we see. Scientists have come to accept the Big Bang model of the universe, in which the universe has a starting point, and that nothing existed previous to that moment. Well, God didn't create the universe out of pre-existing stuff. It just says, He created it. He said, and it became. The universe is now expanding from that initial moment, and the background radiation emission from that original explosion can still be detected. We can still trace what they call the fossil sound of that initial bang.
George Sim Johnson said, The book of Genesis has held up well under the scrutiny of modern geology and archaeology. Twentieth-century physics describes the beginning of the universe in virtually the same terms as Genesis. Space, time, and matter came out of nothing in a single burst of light and energy, entirely hospitable to carbon-based life. See, the universe was patterned to bring life. A growing number of chemists and biologists agree that life had its origin from clay templates. I would say all this is a curious development for Darwinists. See, that even now they're tracing back that clay templates have something that life can be formed from. Arnold Pinzias, Nobel Prize in Physics. A man used to work in the Southern Bell Laboratory. In 1978, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics, along with others. He said about the Big Bang. The best data we have are exactly what I would have predicted had I nothing to go on but the first five books of Moses, the Psalms and the Bible as a whole. So here you have the scientist that he doesn't really consider the Bible as well, but he has to admit that the scientific evidence has come the way of the Bible instead of against the Bible. Now, do animals really reproduce after their own kind? As Genesis 1.21 says, God created the animals after their own kind. Or do they evolve as a theory of evolution teaches? Evolution teaches no. Animals do not create and reproduce after their own kind. They actually evolve to become other kinds. Cats eventually become dogs. Dogs eventually become bears. Bears eventually become giraffes. Giraffes and so on.
The two principal laws in biology about the origins of animals and the law of biogenesis says living matter only comes from living matter. And number two, living things reproduce according to their own kind. Chickens produce eggs that produce more chickens, not something else.
Microevolution or changes within a species does occur, but macroevolution or the change from one animal kind to another has never been found in nature. Lions keep making lions, bears keep making bears, and rabbits keep making rabbits. So science actually backs the Bible and not evolution in this regard. How about the idea of prehistoric man? Some say, well, they found a skull cap that is called from a caveman, and some bones they say are 80,000 years old.
If man was created 6,000 years ago, how could these bones exist?
First, we should point out that theories based on this paleontological record often include speculation. Scientists may say they have educated guesses, and they believe in the theory of evolution that often corrupts their value. Remember, man's recorded history dates only to less than 6,000 years ago. So what happened before is not a precise science. We don't have writings. We don't have anything we can check completely. The Bible records a history of mankind from the creation of Adam and Eve. It does not deal with what we might call, quote, man-like creatures that lived on the earth before the creation of mankind as we know it. Without divine revelation and with so many past geological upheavals of the earth, there's no way of knowing for sure what these creatures were, what they actually looked like, when they existed, or what purpose they served. We just know they weren't human beings. They were part of a world before Adam, what we call a pre-idamic world, which the Bible does not fill us in on the details. Now, how about the question on the Garden of Eden and Adam and Eve? Did they actually exist? What's the evidence for Adam and Eve? Well, first of all, some think Adam and Eve were fictional characters, yet Jesus Christ certainly believed they were real. He says about Adam and Eve in Matthew 19, 4 through 5. Have you not read that he who made them at the beginning made them male and female and said, For this reason a man shall live his father, leave his father and mother, and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh? So Jesus Christ believed Adam and Eve existed. He's our Savior. And if Adam and Eve had not existed, he would not have used that account.
In fact, Jesus Christ's own genealogy goes all the way back to Adam and Eve in Luke chapter 3, verse 38. Also, written languages date back to around 4000 BC, about the time the biblical chronology indicates Adam and Eve lived. From 4000 BC to 2000 BC, history records an amazing advance of technology, art, and culture. So it talks about Adam and Eve living about 4000 years before Christ. For instance, pictographic and then cuneiform writing appears around 4000 years before the time of Christ. Elaborate architecture using mathematics arises. Metallurgy using copper and then bronze is mastered. And music and art reach sophisticated levels. All this happened within 4000 years of the time before Christ. This is all faithfully recorded in the Genesis record, where cities are built, like it tells us in Genesis 4.17. Musical skills are noted, Genesis 4.21. And metalwork appears, Genesis 4.22. As Henry Haley explains about the region where Adam and Eve first lived near the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, here we can see animals reproduce after their own kind, not after another kind. And here is the area, the Persian Gulf is here. And here are the two rivers that we know, the Euphrates, the Tigris River, and the Bible tells us there were four rivers that merged right there where or came out of the area of Eden. Well, satellite imagery, photographs, detected two fossil rivers. These rivers here are, they dried out, but through satellite imagery you can see that there were two large rivers that once flowed into the same area here where the Euphrates and the Tigris River. All right, it says here, Henry Haley and his Bible Handbook. It says, ethnologists, these are the ones who study races, quite generally consider this region right here, this area, which the Bible says is where life began, Adam and Eve. Notice what historians and also, like, ethnologists who trace back the history of mankind. It says, they consider this region to have been the original home of all the present races of man. Is that just a coincidence that these men that study outside the Bible come to the same conclusion? It was the region from where the ox came, the goat, sheep, horse, the horse, the pig, the dog, the apple, peaches, the pears, the plums, the cherries, mulberries, gooseberries, the vine, the olive, the fig, the date, the almonds, the wheat, barley, oats, the peas, the beans, the flax, the spinach, the radish, the onion, and most of our fruits and vegetables all come from this area. It is the cradle of the human race. So here are independent studies and they trace where all of these fruits and the plants and animals all come from. They come from the area that the Bible says man started as well. Now, where is the Garden of Eden today? Some people are asked that. If it existed, where is it today? Well, just remember that the Garden of Eden existed prior to the flood. And when the flood covered the earth, it destroyed the Garden of Eden. So that would not exist today. But the Bible does leave geographical clues of where it existed. As we have mentioned, that these rivers, all these four rivers are a key location where it says the Garden of Eden was from. Now, of course, there are other ideas as well. This isn't the only one, but certainly in finding two fossil rivers where the Bible says were four makes a lot of sense.
It says it was in this region of the upper Persian Gulf, this area, where the Sumerians, probably the first writers of history, mentioned their origins was the land of Dilmun, a paradise where all the animals were tamed, and neither sickness nor death existed. So here's another account of Eden, the Garden of Eden, but from the Sumerian point of view. So if this was just invented, why do you have other peoples writing about a time when the animals were tamed? They wrote, it is a pure, clean, and bright place where the lion does not kill, nor does the wolf devour the sheep. See, but they lost. They said that was a period of time, at the beginning of mankind, when that type of environment existed. The Babylonians called this paradise Eridu, where the Adapa, or the Babylonian Adam, lived. They said he was the seed of mankind, but later offended the gods by obtaining secret knowledge and was made mortal, thus bringing sickness upon the people. They wrote, near Eridu was a garden in which was a mysterious sacred tree, a tree of life planted by the gods, protected by guardian spirits, and no man entered. Here you have another verification from the Babylonians. They describe that at the beginning of mankind there was such a garden. Archaeological evidence shows this area was heavily populated from the beginning of civilization, and it is the region where the most ancient forms of written script, pictographic and cuneiform, have been found. Ur, the home of Abraham, was only 12 miles from Eridu, and Farah, the traditional home of Noah, was 70 miles away.
And so, of course, the garden was part of that pre-flood world that was completely covered with water and destroyed during the Great Flood. No remains of the Garden of Eden would have survived when Noah, his family, and the animals disembarked and began to populate the newly transformed world. So, about the Tower of Babel, if you can go over there to the area of Iraq near Babylon, you find there's a huge pit where at one time was a huge tower, and there actually still are bricks inside the pit. Now, these bricks have been taken through hundreds of years, and Nebuchadnezzar, the Babylonian king, when Daniel was there, actually wanted to build it even larger than it was before. And some of those bricks in that area still have the brand with Nebuchadnezzar's seal on it, showing that there actually was a huge tower in the area of Babylon. So, you see, we don't have to apologize. We don't have to be out here just talking about, well, let's talk about relationships, and let's all talk about good things, because kids need answers. They need to stand up and say, yes, the account in Genesis is true, and God does not lie, as it was brought out in the sermonette as well, and that we have a sound foundation to lay the rest of the Bible on top of. If you throw away the Genesis account, then everything becomes weak. Then you have your building, your faith, on a house of sand, or on top of sand. But instead, we have a very solid foundation. We don't have anything to apologize about. And to finish, just think, in God's kingdom, when the world tomorrow comes, it says here in Isaiah chapter 11, verse 9, it says, for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. Now when Christ comes, we're going to have all of the information available. And just think the ocean, how deep it is. Some areas are over 32,000 feet in depth. You could drop Mount Everest, and the top of Mount Everest wouldn't even go over the surface of it. And God is going to provide so much understanding and knowledge for us. And He's the one that gave us His Word. And so we have to maintain that foundation. People that leave the church, that go to the world, start believing that we are just smart monkeys, that we, the biblical account, are just mythical stories. Those are the people that lose faith, that eventually just let themselves go into this world, become very worldly minded, thinking that this is all we have. And they forget that there is a Creator God that we're going to give account of for our actions, and that we need to think about keeping God's commandments. It was brought out again in the sermonette that He who doesn't practice those commandments, He who's not following God's laws, are not going to make it into God's kingdom. And so just remember that the knowledge of God is something that we have access to through His Word. And let's keep the faith and remember that God knew what He was doing when He wrote the book of Genesis.
(Slide one) Book by Ken Ham, Already Gone, Starts: “Look around you at the youth here – 2/3 will be gone by the time they are adults. Interviewed 1000 in their 20’s
We are not immune.
Why? Ham says, basically, Church provided Bible stories – not belief system. Outside world – bombarded by science, kids doubt, disconnect – it happened to me.
(Slide 2) Book – starts with Europe – since 1969, 1500 churches have closed down. 2.5% now attend Bible based church. U.S. is next.
Problem – why kids leaving – first mentally, then physically. Were told Bible stories not real, no solid belief system. Don’t have answers to tough scientific questions – so they disconnect.
P. 123 – not relevant
p. 109-110 Placebo effect
p. 113 – crux
1. Majority – Catholics, mainline Protestants – Genesis 1-11 Allegories, not historical, believe evolution is true, but God-guided—Pope – apes evolved, finally given a soul.
2. Recent creationists – lump all within 7-10,000 yrs. – the 40 tests astronomy, physics – expansion rates, echo, geology, radiometric dating, ice, corals, fossil layers, etc. Believe trilobites, dinosaurs and Adam all created within a week some 7,000 years. 250,000 fossils – 15 major layers – layer cake – no fossils of dinosaurs and man, or mammals. Plant life as well.
3. Third camp – ancient earth creationists – two groups – day/age, literal day/destruction.
(Slide 3 & 4)
When you study both sides evolution – takes more faith than to believe in a Creator.
4 unanswered questions:
1. Where is the evidence from non-life to life? Greatest step of all. (Slide 5)
The Miller-Urey experiment were the equivalent of using chemical reactions to come up with some crude organic building blocks. But how do you get those loose blocks to form an elegant and functional house--with all the blocks in the right places? This comparable house would also include a foundation, walls, doors, windows, roof, electrical power, and a sewer system. Additionally, it needs to create a variety of materials besides the blocks that have to be precisely formed and fitted, and then it must have the ability to reproduce itself. The utter complexity behind this simply defies the imagination.
Yet, the most primitive cell is far more complex than even the most sophisticated of houses.
When scientists do the math, Darwinism just doesn’t add up to anything probable or possible.
Sir Fred Hoyle, the late British astronomer, notes about the Miller-Urey experiment: “The...building blocks of proteins can therefore be produced by natural means. But this is far from proving that life could have evolved in this way. No one has shown that the correct arrangements of amino acids, like the orderings in enzymes, can be produced by this method...A junkyard contains all the bits and pieces of a Boeing 747, dismembered and in disarray. A whirlwind happens to blow through the yard. What is the chance that after its passage a fully assembled 747, ready to fly, will be found standing there? So small as to be negligible, even if a tornado were to blow through enough junkyards to fill the whole Universe" (The Intelligent Universe, 1983, pp.18-19, emphasis added throughout).
Features: living things possess DNA; metabolic system, reproduce, growth, stimulus response; goal directed interaction w/environment.
2. Solve chicken or egg dilemma. DNA & Protein –
3. DNA info. in volume of pinhead equivalent pile of books from earth to moon 500 times. Distance is 250,000 miles from earth to moon. Circumference of earth is 25,000 miles so pile of books 10 times around earth.
4. Evolution – two basic mechanisms – mutations & N.S. – so where all species in process mutation?
Slide 6 -- Cambrian Explosion
32 of 33 phyla – body types appear. It’s like the early forms appearing of refrigerators, air conditioner, car, submarine, airplane. Trilobites, etc. Filled oceans – then wiped out white board
Progressively adding more advanced species – eliminating, making space.
So I don’t have enough faith to believe in evolution.
Biblical account of creation of Universe: Solid basis? Yes it does. Scientists have come to accept the “Big Bang” model of the universe, in which the universe has a starting point, and that nothing existed previous to that moment. The universe is now expanding from that initial moment, and the background radiation emissions from the original “explosion” can still be detected. Perhaps George Sim Johnston sums it up best, “The book of Genesis has held up well under the scrutiny of modern geology and archaeology. Twentieth-century physics, moreover, describes the beginning of the universe in virtually the same cosmological terms as Genesis. Space, time and matter came out of nothing in a single burst of light entirely hospitable to carbon-based life. A growing number of chemists and biologists agree that life had its origin from clay templates…I would say all this is a curious development for Darwinists” (Reader’s Digest, May 1991, p. 31).
Arno Penzias, Nobel Prize in Physics 1978– about the Big Bang: “The best data we have are exactly what I would have predicted had I nothing to go on but the first five books of Moses (Bible), the Psalms and the Bible as a whole.”
· Do animals really reproduce after their own kind, as Gen. 1:21 says, or do they evolve as the Theory of Evolution teaches?
Darwinian evolution, as taught in schools, claims all animals evolved from an originally tiny and primitive ancestor. This theory asks you to believe that microscopic kinds of creatures, such as amebas, eventually evolved into fish, then amphibians, then birds, then mammals and finally--to human beings!
Yet the two principal laws in biology about the origins of animals, the laws of biogenesis, which have never been known to have failed, directly contradict evolution! They are: 1) Living matter only comes from living matter; and 2). Living things reproduce according to their own kind. Chickens produce eggs that produce more chickens—not something else.
Microevolution, or the changes within a species, does occur. But macroevolution, or the change from one animal kind to another, has never been found in nature.
Lions keep making lions, bears keep making bears, and rabbits keep making rabbits. So science actually backs the Bible and not evolution in this regard!
· A young man recently asked, “The bones or fragments of bones like the skull cap of what is called a caveman have, from what I have found, been discovered a long time ago-- some bones being of 80,000 years ago. The question is, if men were created 6,000 years ago how could these bones exist?”
First, we should point out that theories based upon paleontological findings often include speculation (paleontologists might say "educated guesses") and the common approach of overlaying them with the theory of evolution often corrupts their value. Remember, man’s recorded history only dates to less than 6,000 years ago—so what happened before is not a precise science.
The Bible records the history of mankind from the creation of Adam and Eve. It does not deal with what we might call "manlike creatures" that lived on the earth before the creation of mankind as we know it. Without divine revelation, and with so many past geologic upheavals of the earth, there's no way of knowing for sure what these creatures were, what they actually looked like, when they existed or what purpose they served.
· Did Adam and Eve actually exist?
Some think Adam and Eve were fictional characters, yet Jesus Christ certainly believed they were real. He said about Adam and Eve, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?” (Matthew 19:4-5, Emphasis added).
In fact, Jesus Christ’s own genealogy is recorded all the way back to Adam and Seth (Luke 3:38).
Also, written language dates back to around 4,000 B.C., about the time biblical chronology indicates Adam and Eve lived. From 4,000 B.C. to 2,000 B.C., history records an amazing advance of technology, art and culture.
For instance, pictographic and then cuneiform writing appears. Elaborate architecture using mathematics arises, metallurgy using copper and then bronze is mastered and music and art reach sophisticated levels. This all is faithfully recorded in the Genesis record, where cities are built (Genesis 4:17), musical skills are noted (Genesis 4:21) and metalwork appears (Genesis 4:22).
As Henry Halley explains about the region where Adam and Eve first lived, near the Euphrates and Tigris rivers (Genesis 2:14), “Ethnologists quite generally consider this region to have been the original home of all the present races of men. It was the region from whence came the ox, goat, sheep, horse, pig, dog, apple, peach, pear, plum, cherry, quince, mulberry, gooseberry, vine, olive, fig, date, almond, wheat, barley, oats, pea, bean, flax, spinach, radish, onion, and most of our fruits and vegetables. [It is] the cradle of the human race” (Halley’s Bible Handbook, New Revised Edition, 1965, p. 64).
No one knows for sure, because it was located in a pre-Flood landscape, but the Bible leaves some geographical clues about where it existed.
The Bible states the Garden of Eden was situated where four rivers branched out (Genesis 2:10-14). Two of the rivers mentioned in the Garden of Eden are still known today—the Tigris [Hiddekel] and the Euphrates (Genesis 2:14). The other two rivers, the Pishon and the Gihon, are not readily identified.
It is possible, though, that two great dry river beds revealed in that area by satellite imagery could turn out to be these two ancient rivers--the Pishon and the Gihon (see Smithsonian, “Has the Garden of Eden Been Located at Last?” Vol. 18, 1987). It seems that the Garden of Eden was located close to where the Tigris and the Euphrates converge and empty their waters, in the northern tip of the Persian Gulf.
It was in this region of the upper Persian Gulf where the Sumerians, probably the first writers of history, mention their origins was the land of Dilmun, a paradise where all the animals were tame and neither sickness nor death existed. They wrote, “It is a pure, clean and bright place…where the lion does not kill, nor does the wolf devour the sheep” (Samuel Kramer, History Begins in Sumer, 1974, p. 228).
The Babylonians called this paradise, Eridu, where “Adapa” or the Babylonian Adam, lived. They said he was the seed of mankind, but later offended the gods by obtaining secret knowledge and was made mortal, thus bringing sickness upon the people. They wrote that, “Near Eridu was a garden, in which was a mysterious Sacred Tree, a Tree of Life, planted by the gods…protected by guardian spirits, and no man enters” (Halley, p. 66).
Archaeological evidence shows this area to be heavily populated from the beginning of civilization, and it is the region where the most ancient forms of written script--pictographic and cuneiform--have been found. Ur, the home of Abraham, was only 12 miles from Eridu, and Farah, the traditional home of Noah, was 70 miles away.
Why is the Garden of Eden not found in that region? Very simple--the garden was part of the pre-Flood world that was completely covered with water and destroyed during the great Flood. No remains of the Garden of Eden would have survived when Noah, his family, and the animals disembarked and began to populate the newly transformed terrain.
