In our continuing series on "The Messiah" this sermon considers the scriptural evidence of the pre-existence of Jesus Christ before His human birth. From the teaching of His existence from before creation, to passages that prove that God created all things through Jesus Christ, and through several of the major proofs of His existence in the time of the Old Testament, the Scriptures are consistent about this truth. Jesus said of Himself, "Before Abraham was, I AM." We can be assured that He was the one who was seen and who spoke to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and others. Knowing this truth helps us to worship both the Father and His Son with greater honor and faith.

The Messiah ~ Part 8 ~ “Before Abraham Was, I AM” ~ Handout

The questions in this handout follow the chronological flow from eternity past to Christ’s ministry.

Question 1 ~  What does the Bible teach about the existence of Jesus Christ before the time of creation?

John 1:1-2 John 1:1-2 [1] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. [2] The same was in the beginning with God.
American King James Version×

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was in the beginning with God.”

Who is “the Word”?

John 17:5 John 17:5And now, O Father, glorify you me with your own self with the glory which I had with you before the world was.
American King James Version×

“And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with (“alongside” - margin) You before the world was.”

Was Jesus with the Father before creation?

1 John 1:1-4 1 John 1:1-4 [1] That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked on, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; [2] (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and show to you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested to us;) [3] That which we have seen and heard declare we to you, that you also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. [4] And these things write we to you, that your joy may be full.
American King James Version×

“That which was from the beginning…the Word of life…”

Question 2 ~  Who does the Bible teach as being the Creator, and what did He create?

John 1:3 John 1:3All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
American King James Version×

“All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.”

Colossians 1:16 Colossians 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
American King James Version×

“For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.  All things were created through Him and for Him.”

American King James Version×

[God] “has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;”

Hebrews 1:10-12 Hebrews 1:10-12 [10] And, You, Lord, in the beginning have laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of your hands: [11] They shall perish; but you remain; and they all shall wax old as does a garment; [12] And as a clothing shall you fold them up, and they shall be changed: but you are the same, and your years shall not fail.
American King James Version×

“And: “You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands; they will perish, but You remain; and they will grow old like a garment; like a cloak You will fold them up, and they will be changed.  But You are the same, and Your years will not fail.”

This is what the Father says to His Son.

Quoted from Psalms 102:25-27 Psalms 102:25-27 [25] Of old have you laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of your hands. [26] They shall perish, but you shall endure: yes, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a clothing shall you change them, and they shall be changed: [27] But you are the same, and your years shall have no end.
American King James Version×

Psalms 90:2 Psalms 90:2Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.
American King James Version×

“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.”

Who is this referring to?

Question 3 ~ Who did Jesus say He saw fall from heaven?  Was it a created being who fell?  Would this have been before Adam and Eve were created?  What does this prove about Christ’s existence?

Luke 10:18 Luke 10:18And he said to them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
American King James Version×

“And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightening from heaven.”

American King James Version×

“How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! …”

Question 4 ~ Who does John say has seen God?  The answer to this is essential to our understanding of Jesus Christ.

John 1:18 John 1:18No man has seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him.
American King James Version×
and

1 John 4:12 1 John 4:12No man has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwells in us, and his love is perfected in us.
American King James Version×

“No one has seen God at any time.” …

John 5:37 John 5:37And the Father himself, which has sent me, has borne witness of me. You have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.
American King James Version×

“And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me.  You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form.”

Question 5 ~  Yet, the Bible says people of old saw “God.”  Who, then, did they see?  Did Jesus speak of this?

John 8:56-58 John 8:56-58 [56] Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. [57] Then said the Jews to him, You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham? [58] Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Before Abraham was, I am.
American King James Version×

“Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.  … Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”

Genesis 17:1-22 Genesis 17:1-22 [1] And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said to him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be you perfect. [2] And I will make my covenant between me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly. [3] And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying, [4] As for me, behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations. [5] Neither shall your name any more be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made you. [6] And I will make you exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come out of you. [7] And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your seed after you in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God to you, and to your seed after you. [8] And I will give to you, and to your seed after you, the land wherein you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God. [9] And God said to Abraham, You shall keep my covenant therefore, you, and your seed after you in their generations. [10] This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your seed after you; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. [11] And you shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant between me and you. [12] And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of your seed. [13] He that is born in your house, and he that is bought with your money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. [14] And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant. [15] And God said to Abraham, As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. [16] And I will bless her, and give you a son also of her: yes, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her. [17] Then Abraham fell on his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born to him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear? [18] And Abraham said to God, O that Ishmael might live before you! [19] And God said, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son indeed; and you shall call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him. [20] And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation. [21] But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear to you at this set time in the next year. [22] And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.

[26] And he said, Let me go, for the day breaks. And he said, I will not let you go, except you bless me. [27] And he said to him, What is your name? And he said, Jacob. [28] And he said, Your name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince have you power with God and with men, and have prevailed. [29] And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray you, your name. And he said, Why is it that you do ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
