In our continuing series on "The Messiah" this sermon considers the scriptural evidence of the pre-existence of Jesus Christ before His human birth. From the teaching of His existence from before creation, to passages that prove that God created all things through Jesus Christ, and through several of the major proofs of His existence in the time of the Old Testament, the Scriptures are consistent about this truth. Jesus said of Himself, "Before Abraham was, I AM." We can be assured that He was the one who was seen and who spoke to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and others. Knowing this truth helps us to worship both the Father and His Son with greater honor and faith.

The Messiah ~ Part 8 ~ “Before Abraham Was, I AM” ~ Handout

The questions in this handout follow the chronological flow from eternity past to Christ’s ministry.

Question 1 ~  What does the Bible teach about the existence of Jesus Christ before the time of creation?

John 1:1-2

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was in the beginning with God.”

Who is “the Word”?

John 17:5

“And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with (“alongside” - margin) You before the world was.”

Was Jesus with the Father before creation?

1 John 1:1-4

“That which was from the beginning…the Word of life…”

Question 2 ~  Who does the Bible teach as being the Creator, and what did He create?

John 1:3

“All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.”

Col. 1:16

“For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.  All things were created through Him and for Him.”

Heb. 1:2

[God] “has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;”

Heb. 1:10-12

“And: “You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands; they will perish, but You remain; and they will grow old like a garment; like a cloak You will fold them up, and they will be changed.  But You are the same, and Your years will not fail.”

This is what the Father says to His Son.

Quoted from Psa. 102:25-27

Psa. 90:2

“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.”

Who is this referring to?

Question 3 ~ Who did Jesus say He saw fall from heaven?  Was it a created being who fell?  Would this have been before Adam and Eve were created?  What does this prove about Christ’s existence?

Luke 10:18

“And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightening from heaven.”

Ezek. 28:15

“You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you.”

Isa. 14:12

“How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! …”

Question 4 ~ Who does John say has seen God?  The answer to this is essential to our understanding of Jesus Christ.

John 1:18 and

1 John 4:12

“No one has seen God at any time.” …

John 5:37

“And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me.  You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form.”

Question 5 ~  Yet, the Bible says people of old saw “God.”  Who, then, did they see?  Did Jesus speak of this?

John 8:56-58

“Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.  … Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”

Gen. 17:1-22

V. 1  “…the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am Almighty God…”

Who was this?

Gen. 26:2-5

V. 2  “Then the Lord appeared to [Isaac]…”  The promises passed on to Isaac.

Gen. 32:24-30

V. 30  [Jacob said] “…For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”

Ex. 3:2, 6

[The Angel (Messenger) of the Lord appeared to Moses, at the burning bush.]

Ex. 3:13-15

“… And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” … “The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob…”

Who is “I AM”?  Who did Jesus say?

John 12:41

“These things Isaiah said when he saw His glory and spoke of Him.”

Who was this?  Jesus.

Conclusion:  The Bible clearly teaches that Jesus Christ, the Messiah, has existed from eternity past, and was seen, heard, and worshiped by many people of old.  Both the Old and New Testaments affirm this truth.  John 8:58 “Before Abraham was, I AM.”
