Were the Samaritans Gentiles?

There were Jews, and there were Gentiles. Jews avoided relationships with Gentiles. And they avoided relationships with the Samaritans. The Samaritans were not Jews. So, were they Gentiles? What do the scriptures, history, and new DNA research tell us about who the Samaritans were?
