Grace, works, giving, and sacrifice are the work of a true Christian. That is the sacrificing way we are learning now as imitators and students of Jesus Christ.

The Work of a True Christian
Beloit 8/13/11

INTRO:Is “work” really just another 4 letter word?
Either most don’t like work as much as other activities, or it replaces family, or it IS success. All unbalanced.
Physical work is not really God’s Spiritual work of Creating His Family and Kingdom.
God works too. His work as it pertains to humans is salvation, and creation of His Family Kingdom.
6 Days of physical Creation “work” was “very good” work. Then God set apart one more day and rested. We turn from physical work to concentrate of Spiritual connection with the Creator every Sabbath.

We are to “work” in this physical life.
What is the “work” of a true imitator and disciple of Jesus Christ as a Child of the Father?
How is that work done?

BENEFIT Statement:Does God evaluate the quality of the work of a true Christian?
How would He evaluate His Children?
Are some of God’s Children more effective at His work than others?
If so, does God respond in any way?

SPS:God speaks to us simply and clearly about our active and necessary role in His Plan – Today we look into what IS “The Work of a True Christian?”

BODY:To do this we will divide the instructions and encouragement of God to His People into three basic discussions of God with His Children. He tells us to 1.“Work”, to 2.“Bear Fruit”, and 3.“Sacrifice”
1.     Work
I work and my Father works. WE are to work too.
John 5:17 John 5:17But Jesus answered them, My Father works till now, and I work.
American King James Version×
17But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”
John 14:12 John 14:12Truly, truly, I say to you, He that believes on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go to my Father.
American King James Version×
12“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14If you  £ask anything in My name, I will do it.
We are not to be earning salvation. That cannot be done. But we are to learn salvation.
Ephesians 2:4 Ephesians 2:4But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us,
American King James Version×
4But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
(((Christ showed us how to do the Work of a true Christian. He GAVE His life. Complete selflessness.
(((Titus 2:11 Titus 2:11For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men,
American King James Version×
11For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.)))
Fourth Commandment shows God doing physical work. He rested from it for our Example. Sabbath = Spiritual
Ex 20:8 8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
God reaches our minds with the ideas of working. We understand production, profit, getting paid for effort …BUT what effort does God “pay” for, if any?

2.     Profit and “Bear Fruit”
When God speaks of profit, He is speaking of sacrificing to GIVE Life.
John 5:19 John 5:19Then answered Jesus and said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he sees the Father do: for what things soever he does, these also does the Son likewise.
American King James Version×
19Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. 20For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel. 21For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will.
So must also the true Followers of Christ learn to actively give their lives to profit the Family
John 15:1 John 15:1I am the true vine, and my Father is the farmer.
American King James Version×
1“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
16 16You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.
1 Peter 2:11 1 Peter 2:11Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
American King James Version×
11Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, 12having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation.
Unprofitable servant (the attitude of Satan – not producing, ever TAKING)
Mt 25:30 14“For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. 15And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey. 16Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. 17And likewise he who had received two gained two more also. 18But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord’s money. 19After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them.
20“So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.’ 21His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ 22He also who had received two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.’ 23His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’
24“Then he who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.’
26“But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. 27So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. 28So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.
29‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. 30And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
((((Bring forth good fruit, by sacrificing of self for others to live. Consistent repeating theme of self-sacrifice in order to bear fruit and profit, not by OUR strength, but in cooperation with Christ.
John 15:5 John 15:5I am the vine, you are the branches: He that stays in me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing.
American King James Version×
5“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.
9“As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. 10If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.
11“These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full. 12This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. 14You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. ))))
Spiritual Fruit (Characteristics), 1337)
To attribute evil to God’s Approach of giving life away to make more Life, is the attitude that is unforgiven.
Matthew 7:17 Matthew 7:17Even so every good tree brings forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree brings forth evil fruit.
American King James Version×
17Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20Therefore by their fruits you will know them.
Matthew 12:33 Matthew 12:33Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.
American King James Version×
31“Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. 32Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.
33“Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit. 34Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.

3.   Sacrifice Yields an Effect – (Virtually ALL of the accounts of Christ’s Approach and Miracles were not pleasant for Him in one way or another. Even Lazarus’ resurrection was after His friend’s death) REAL sacrifice is not convenient.

Living Sacrifice– Life given is NOT life lost, but MULTIPLIED.
Romans 12:1 Romans 12:1I beseech you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.
American King James Version×
1I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Lose life, find it– This is so OTHERS have Life TOO
Mk 8:35 34When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 35For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? 37Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 38For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
(((Accused and innocent, and take it well …(Sacrificial not defeated attitude)
1 Peter 2:20 1 Peter 2:20For what glory is it, if, when you be buffeted for your faults, you shall take it patiently? but if, when you do well, and suffer for it, you take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.
American King James Version×
19For this is commendable, if because of conscience toward God one endures grief, suffering wrongfully. 20For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take it patiently? But when you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God. 21For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for  us, leaving  us an example, that you should follow His steps:
22    “Who committed no sin,
Nor was deceit found in His mouth”; {Isaiah 53:9 Isaiah 53:9And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
American King James Version×
}
23who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed. 25For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and  Overseer of your souls.)))
(((Endure to the end– Life-Giving attitude - Sacrifice IS life – self-protection/elevation is NOT
Mt 24:13 13But he who endures to the end shall be saved. 14And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.)))

Come out of her my children (do not be of or like the world of self-promotion, which will be measured by the same Standards of God as all humanity)
Revelation 18:4 Revelation 18:4And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that you be not partakers of her sins, and that you receive not of her plagues.
American King James Version×
4And I heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues. 5For her sins have reached to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities. 6Render to her just as she rendered to you, and repay her double according to her works; in the cup which she has mixed, mix double for her. 7In the measure that she glorified herself and lived luxuriously, in the same measure give her torment and sorrow; for she says in her heart, ‘I sit as queen, and am no widow, and will not see sorrow.’ 8Therefore her plagues will come in one day—death and mourning and famine. And she will be utterly burned with fire, for strong is the Lord God who judges her.
God gives liberally and would have all men to come to the knowledge of the truth and be saved.
(((James 1:2 James 1:2My brothers, count it all joy when you fall into divers temptations;
American King James Version×
2My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. 5If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.)))
1 Timothy 2:1 1 Timothy 2:1I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
American King James Version×
1Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. 3For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

God doesn’t give more of His Spirit to some than others. Some people actually GIVE their lives over to God and His Work more than others, so they are in effect responding MORE to God’s Spirit. It just seems that they have more of God’s Mind in them. In fact, they are just doing what GOD is doing – GIVING their lives …more than others. God understands that these Children of His have more experience living as He does, and grants them more responsibility to GIVE even MORE. It’s just HOW it all works.

CONCLUSION: Ephesians 5:9 Ephesians 5:9(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
American King James Version×
8For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9(for the fruit of the  Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. 11And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. 12For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. 13But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. 14Therefore He says:
                         “Awake, you who sleep,
    Arise from the dead,
And Christ will give you light.” {most likely referring to Isaiah 60:1 Isaiah 60:1Arise, shine; for your light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen on you.
American King James Version×
in reference to Paul’s experience}
15See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
(((Colossians 1:3-6 Colossians 1:3-6 [3] We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, [4] Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which you have to all the saints, [5] For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel; [6] Which is come to you, as it is in all the world; and brings forth fruit, as it does also in you, since the day you heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:
American King James Version×
3We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, 4since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all the saints; 5because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel, 6which has come to you, as it has also in all the world, and is bringing forth  fruit [NU adds “and growing”], as it is also among you since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth; )))

We “Work” physically by sacrificing our life to produce in this physical world. AND we are to learn to PRODUCE as Christ and our father “Works”.

We produce fruit both physical through life expending and Spiritually by Giving our actual “self” away.

This Fruit is by the Holy Spirit. It is selfless outgoing concern and support of LIFE.

We “Work” to create and support real LIFE.
We “Work” to support the dissemination of the Truth, which is supporting LIFE.
We “Work” to practice active selflessness by God’s Spirit motivating (as we allow It to do so) us to grow to example and BE like God! WE Work as God does, BY God’s Mind as we submit to His Way of selfless Life.

How hard to understand is THAT? Impossible! It make NO sense to mankind. “Selfless living cannot work” …

CLOSE:  BUT …we are to PROVE God’s Way works!

Philippians 1:11 Philippians 1:11Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
American King James Version×
9And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

(((Hebrews 10:24 Hebrews 10:24And let us consider one another to provoke to love and to good works:
American King James Version×
19Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. 24And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. )))

We continue overcoming this physical self-while - Exampling, and supporting REAL, True, Godly LIFE, as HE does!
