Proverbs: A King Should Not Betray Justice

1 minute read time

Wisdom that sticks with youstraight from God's Word.

“The lips of a king speak as an oracle, and his mouth should not betray justice” (Proverbs 16:10, NIV).

“Because a king is a representative of God (Romans 13:1), his edicts and decisions carry authority and finality. Therefore his mouth must not transgress in judgment” (Believer’s Bible Commentary).

God works through the leaders of the world around us, unbeknownest to and unacknowledged by many. But this isn't new, God has long worked through the rulers of the age. The Bible records that He allowed the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah to be punished by waves of invasion led by the kings of Assyria and Babylon (2 Kings 17:1-41 and 2 Kings 25:1-30). And He also worked through King Cyrus of Persia to restore the Temple and the people of Judah to the land of Israel (Ezra 1:2-11).

We can learn valuable leadership lessons from this proverb, even though we are not all kings or rulers. To lead, in any capacity, is a form of service and in order to serve others well, a leader must be just. We know the source of wisdom and justice comes from God and we have access to that resource through the pages of the Bible.

How much have you learned about true justice?
