The Comfort of Psalm 91

When we are worried or upset, turn to Psalm 91 to receive comfort from God.

[Darris McNeely] With all that has been taking place in America and the world in recent months with a pandemic, with a economic crisis, and now civil unrest in the United States, we watch this, we wonder, and we worry. The other night it brought back to me something that I think, actually, I'd covered earlier during this period, on "Beyond Today," a reading from Psalm 91. And the reality of what Psalm 91 says, is so comforting, so encouraging, and so helpful, I think that I need to bring it back to us. And we need to look at it because it speaks to such a time as this.

Let me read a few verses at this point here and think about it. Follow along if you like on your own Bible or just listen. It begins in verse one, Psalm 91. "He who dwells in the secret place of the most high shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." The secret place of God. Think about that. We all need a secret place with God and where we go. "I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in Him, I will trust. Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence." The Bible is very much up to date for what we are facing today. "He shall cover you with His feathers and under His wings, you shall take refuge, His truth shall be your shield and buckler. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor the destruction that lays waste at noon, day. A thousand may fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you. Only with your eyes shall you look and see the reward of the wicked."

There's a reason this Psalm was written placed in the scripture for such a time as this for us to reflect upon, to remember, and to calm, and to settle us, when things begin to get out of hand, rattling our faith and our confidence and causing us concern.
