After surviving more than 20 assassination attempts, the king died this month after a long battle with cancer. With the king's death a new chapter in Mideast-relations begins. Last month he stunned his countrymen by replacing his designated heir and brother, Crown Prince Hassan, with his 37-year-old son, Prince Abdullah. Hassan, described as a capable and competent administrator, had been groomed for leadership since 1965.
