Why the Sacrifice of Christ is Important

As the Passover approaches, it's a good time to be thinking about reconciliation, the penalty of sin, and the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. Why is His sacrifice a fundamental belief, and how can we better understand its importance for our salvation?
