[Steve Myers] We’re in the time of year when tradition becomes very important to most people. But what about the traditions that we keep? They can be very good. Certain things can be wonderful, especially when we get together with family, and the warm feelings and the wonderful opportunities that we have, to experience a togetherness that maybe we wouldn’t experience otherwise. But is all tradition good?

There’s an interesting passage that the apostle Paul wrote to the Thessalonians, and it’s over in 2 Thessalonians, and it’s in chapter 3, verse 6. And he says something interesting. He says, “We command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us” (2 Thessalonians 3:6). So when it comes to tradition in your life, do you match that tradition with what the Bible speaks of? Here, the apostle is very clear. He taught them tradition. He taught them what was good, what was right, what’s the best traditions to have.

Well, if you haven’t looked at your Bible lately, this would be the time to do it. Take a look at, what did Paul teach? What did Jesus Christ teach? What was their example? What were the traditions that they kept? What were these biblical festivals all about? Are we keeping the traditions of the Bible, or are we keeping other traditions? Something to think about at this time of the year.
