How Do We Work Out Our Own Salvation?

Paul instructed the Philippians to work out their own salvation. Was he telling them they could earn salvation? Did he mean we should spend more time in prayer and Bible study? Or did he have something else in mind that the context and other scriptures emphasize as being extremely important for receiving eternal life?
