Why did America become such a great power?

The Seattle Seahawks, winner of this year's Super Bowl, regularly give a huge amount of credit for their team spirit and success to the "12th Man"—referring to their enthusiastic fans and supporters. For those of you who not familiar with American football, a team is allowed 11 players on the playing field at any one time. So the "12th Man" refers to all the other people who are contributing to the team's morale and success. It can include the other players, coaches, staff, etc., but it primarily refers to the moral support from many un-paid loyal fans. The fanbase, especially those cheering in the stadium on game-day, can have a profound energizing impact on players.

In a prophecy of the end time, Jesus Christ foretold that true Christians would be observing the Sabbath! And in the Bible, the weekly "Sabbath" always means the seventh day of the week.

Wise King Solomon wrote, “To everything there is a season… A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance” (Ecclesiastes:3:4).

For Father’s Day, an idea popped into my head—rent the movie “Courageous” to watch with my wife and son. By the end of the movie, we were super thankful for the idea that made an ideal Father’s Day activity!

Venus has been called the “jewel of the sky” and “Earth’s sister planet.” The more I learn about Venus, the more amazed and inspired I am! The special cyclical relationships between Venus and Earth are like an intricate but graceful dance! God gave our solar system a complex and beautiful design!

Pearl Harbor Day, 70 years later, December 7, 2011.

December 7, 1941, was the worst day in U.S. military history as a Japanese armada of ships and planes made a devastating surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. This Hawaiian U.S. naval base was a tempting target for the imperialist Japanese since America’s entire Pacific Fleet was headquartered at Pearl. The Japanese met little resistance as their planes bombed and strafed U.S. Navy ships and Army aircraft.

As we approach the annual U.S. holiday of Thanksgiving, I’ve been thinking of how grateful I am for the Bible! Our Creator has not left us in the dark! He gave us His personal Instruction Book!

The future of the world will largely depend on how our children turn out. And that largely depends on what the older generations are teaching and failing to teach the younger generations. We should consider this a huge responsibility.

Teaching is accomplished by words and by examples. Parents and other adults must be good role models, practicing what they preach.

Americans are frightened by the ongoing recession, but, ironically, a large percent are not afraid to spend pretty scary amounts for Halloween!

Incredibly, seven in 10 Americans plan on celebrating the holiday this year—almost 5 percent more than last year—according to the National Retail Federation’s 2011 Halloween Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey.

The expected expenditures total $6.86 billion! That includes $1 billion on children’s costumes, $1.21 billion on adult costumes, and $310 million on pet costumes.

The terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, resulted in almost 3,000 people losing their lives and about 3,000 children under the age of 18 losing a parent. Plus countless injuries, great physical and financial devastation, excruciating anguish and trauma and national humiliation. Many effects of that nightmare are still with us ten years later.

Many people are familiar with the twenty-third Psalm, in which David writes, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me” (verse 4).

This is a word picture of a lamb confidently going forward even while knowing that lions and wolves are nearby because he knows his shepherd cares for the sheep, is able  to protect them and will  protect them.

As a kid, I loved fireworks and my sons loved fireworks. It's a boy thing.  It made for good father-son outings.  Girls love the beautiful aerial displays, but we guys love detonating everything and making things go boom.  Firecrackers added a lot to my make-believe world of warfare.  I would become engrossed in planting my "bombs" in anthills and annihilating the enemy towns, and putting my "mines" under toy cars and see how high they would get tossed.  And a firecracker in a pipe made a mean cannon.

I'm appalled that President Obama would betray the nation of Israel, one of our most trustworthy and helpful allies. He has officially demanded that Israel pull its borders back to where they were before the 1967 war. If that ever happens, Israel will be indefensible.

Israel is tiny.  It is smaller than any Central American country. When I toured Israel in 1991, I became more aware of how tiny it is. And it will be much tinier if it is forced to shrink into its pre-1967 borders.

It’s amazing to me that preachers with weird ideas often get a big following. Harold Camping has convinced a lot of people that Judgment Day will be this Saturday, May 21st!

Harold Camping has been dogmatically and vehemently announcing that on May 21st Christians (about 3% of the world’s population, he claims) will be raptured to heaven and then the whole earth will suffer the worst earthquakes ever that will happen in each time zone at 6:00 p.m.

Most mothers are very, very devoted to mothering, and so truly deserve to be honored. Their day-after-day tender loving care and influence profoundly molds their children and largely determines the future of the world. That truth is summed up in the famous poem, "The Hand that Rocks the Cradle" ("is the hand that rules the world").

Regarding the death of Osama Bin Laden, I’m grateful for many reasons but not gleeful. When I watched on TV people gathering around the White House and in Times Square in New York to cheer, chant and dance, one part of me felt like joining in and another part of me felt disturbed as I remembered Proverbs:24:17-18 which warns, “Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles; lest the LORD see it, and it displease Him, and He turn away His wrath from him.”
